Of the 2 main classes of transistors, NPN are the more common as they use a negative ground and a positive vcc. PNP can be used in a pos. vcc circuit as a driver for example, as the vcc is applied to the emitter rather than the collector. A NPN switch, on the other hand, has a grounded emitter and the collector is at vcc. One of the more common ones that is quite often used as a switch as well as an amplifier, is the 2SC945. Get a copy of the NTE or RCA's SK transistor cross reference books at your local parts house or from the library. They are excellent guides to get a mini course on transistors, diodes, ICs etc.
Their use is in most electronic products. When you push a button on most anything electronical today, you "tickle" the base of a transistor switch and it preforms the logic function to make something happen. As I said earlier, The collector of a NPN is at vcc and the emitter is at ground, so when the base goes about 0.7 v+ the transistor is turned on and the vcc on the collector is shorted to ground and the circuit it controls is turned on or off. An example is the relay in a cassette player. When you hit the play button, a switching transistor in the ground side of the play solenoid goes to ground and pulls the heads in to the play mode.

Mouser / Allied / DigiKey --- lots of places sell transistors. You can get some at Radio Shack.

NPN just means the junction materials are negative-positive-negative, as opposed to the other way around.

Switching just means they aren't so good for audio.

They are used in all kinds of stuff -- could you give more to go on?

Making transistors do what you decide on them to do on your very own circuits demands attention of greater desirable than 2 or 3 info. learn diagrams of circuits that carry out a similar applications you decide directly to work out how they paintings.
