I have a underbite and was thinking of getting jaw surgery to fix it ( my dentists think it would be a good idea). Could I be back to work in 7 days (and functing). How long till eating solids and feeling better? How is it compared to a tonsilectomy, i have had that done ( in terms of pain and recovery time)?

I have not had orthognathic surgery, but check out http://www.orthognathic.com/ for some answers.

A few of my patients have had jaw surgery and I can tell you that it is no cakewalk. I would not expect to be back to work in 7 days. Maybe 10-14 days. It is NOTHING AT ALL like a tonsillectomy!

never ever have jaw surgery. the joint that controls the jaw is
too delecate and unless there is a medical emergency you will suffer from chronic headaches if you let them start readjusting your jaw.
have them do what they can with braces and rubberbands.
a tmj specialist corrected my jaw with braces and bands. after i was told i should consider surgery.

ask an orthodontist for the phone number for a tmj specialist in your area.

LEO,
I COMPLETELY CONCUR WITH DR. SAM.
HAVING JAW SURGERY IS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO WHEN NEEDED.
CONSIDERING THIS POINT, GOING BACK TO WORK IS A SECOND PRIORITY.

if I'm not mistaken they will tie your mouth shut with wire not sure for how long and you have to eat on a straw.
