Your card will not be charged until checkout. At that time you are supposed to be given the option as to leaving it on that card or paying by another means.

It depends whether you booked directly with the hotel website or via a third party site. If you book via a third party site, be sure to read the 'fine print'. With a third party site, sometimes there's a booking fee charged to your card even if you cancel in advance. That said, I think that some of the companies are changing this policy to keep up with competition. If you book directly with the hotel your credit card is normally just to guarantee the reservation in case you don't cancel and are a no-show. Increasingly though, hotels are offering a discounted rate available ONLY with pre-payment, which is completely non-refundable. In other words, you pay for your room in full for the entire stay at the time of your reservation, in exchange for a discounted rate, but again, it's non-refundable even if you cancel. Again, it's best to always read the 'fine print', especially where your credit card is involved. For instance, the cancellation policy at hotels can vary considerably. I hope this helps!

If you are making reservations on a credit card through a website such as Expeida or Orbitz then you will not be charged until the day that you check into the hotel.

If you are booking directly with the hotel then you may be charged straight away depending on the hotel.

Depends on the hotel. Many of the good prices you see are "pre-pay" discounts. The site should let you know if you are paying in full up front. I'm booking a trip to Europe. All the hotels in London are Pay Up Front. While all the accommodations I've booked in Italy, don't pay until get there.
