This summer, I have to work for a non profit, paid or unpaid. I'd like to find one where I thought I'd actually be useful and one that is doing interesting things.

What are people's favorite non profits? I know there are really neat ones out there, and I'd like to connect.

Haha, I worked with the Starfish program full time last year. I think it's great that someone brought it up in an answer.

It depends on what you're interested in and where you are or where you're willing to go.

In Chicago, there's a great program called "Starfish" that works with inner city youth. In San Francisco, there are some AIDS hospices that can always use some volunteers. And there are always the classics like the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and World Vision.

This website has a huge directory and you can search by keyword: http://www.guidestar.org/

You can also check with local churches or community service center at universities or high schools.

I LOVE the American Red Cross. They're the only humanitarian non-profit organization ratified by the US congress. They're also one of the oldest and trustworthy. They teach people CPR, respond to disaster, collect donated blood, assist armed forces in emergencies at home, and much much more. They're my absolute favorite!!!!! The organization is actually made up of over a million volunteers and 30,000 paid staff. Some chapters even get interns from the americorps program.
