(Deuteronomy 22:23-24 NAB)
If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.

I dont have a God so its a moot point for me.
Shouldnt fundamentalist christians be pushing for these laws to be passed in the USA?
Since they go for 5,000 year old earth, Noah's ark etc. They have to be the biggest bunch of pick and choose people on planet earth.

i'm not sure htat's part of God...even though God wrote the Bible he dind't make the laws of the people make then. it was probably a punishment at the time, in the city's laws that God did not write
Also, the old testement was before the new testament, which means jesus had not yet died for our sins. I think that menas God was free to commit any type of punishment for any who sinned to that extent....though i'm ONLY completley sure of the FIRST part.
my answer again, it was the city's laws to have them stoned, not God's.
Edit: In response to chiguy...i know your a chrsitian as well but the beginning of your answer makes no sense. the poeple were STONED. they weren't disiplined to "live" better lives.
in response to the video given by i'm ok-
that is just freaking ridiculous. that video is stupid and blunt. do i seriously need to explain all of that to you? i won't, because if you're that blind to the meanings behind it....well what good would my explanations be? i'll just explain one thing- the part where it came straight from jesus (if your hand causes you to sin, cut if off, etc etc). you think he actually meant it? don't you think he would've just done it for us? it's a metaphor to what we should do. for example, if you look at porn, it's a sin. your eye causes you to look at porn, simply because it gives you the ability to. this is where jesus's saying comes in (if your eye causes you to sin gouge it out). it's a metaphor to doing anything that will prevent you from continuing to watch it.
that might've been a vague explanation, but simple things like these shouldn't needed to be explained

You should know that people did a lot worse things in the ancient days. Even as far as sacrificing baby girls. I think that trend still exists in some parts of the world, especially in India and China.
Numbers 31:7,17-18 - killed young boys, raped young girls ..
Jesus said:
Matthew 5:17-18 17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I DID NOT COME TO ABOLISH but to fulfill.

I don't follow this God...
Even though the Hellenic Gods are sometimes Harsh to Mankind, they do not advocate punishing the victim, AND they have never assumed that just because she was in a city that she was not AFRAID to cry out because of (for example) a knife at her throat....

If you believe this passage then you must also believe that this same God had just supernaturally intervened to rescue a nation of about one and one half million slaves from Egyptian bondage by performing signs and miracles unseen since the foundation of the world.
You might want to listen to such a God as this.
Tell me about your God.
What has He done?

Why are you so judge mental? Was you there, do you really know what happened? You didn't read the whole bible, you just picked out a part and wrote a question about it. Read the WHOLE BIBLE then come back with relevant questions.

Here is an analogy....a loving father is often strict with his daughter when she is young, immature, and vulnerable - often times such that she screams at her dad for his punishments and restrictions, "I hate you" and "if you loved me you wouldn't treat me like this". Then as she gets older, the father treats her much more gently and with greater freedoms, etc. This is similar to how God has been towards His people when comparing the Old Testament to the New Testament. I recommend reading the New Testament first....so that you can truly understand the Old Testament.

There is nothing that a person who does not believe in God can say or do to "bring God down" it is impossible and it is stupid to attempt that so instead of answering your question, I will just say God bless you. God is getting so tired of you unbelieving people kicking against the pricks. When you kick against pricks, whose feet are getting hurt?
