My doctor said I cannot eat nuts because the little nut particles will get stuck in my colon, or something like that. I forgot what the name of it was.

Some people have pouches in the weak areas of their colon - that pouch is called DIVERTICULA. A condition when such pouches are present is termed as "DIVERTICULOSIS". Since those pouches can contain some food particles or fecal materials, it is therefore exposed to a risk of getting infection. When the diverticula get infected the condition is then called "DIVERTICULITIS".
Usually, when DIVERTICULOSIS is present, the doctor will recommend to avoid nuts, popcorn, and seeds of sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds,etc. It is feared that food particles especially of those foods mentioned could enter, block, or irritate the diverticula. Eating a high-fiber diet is highly required.

Yes, I believe it's diverticulitis. My husband had it at one time and he was in a lot of pain (!) and I had to take him to the emergency room. He was told by the doctor that he had "diverticulitis" and he should not eat nuts, peanut butter with nuts (crunchy pb, which was his favorite), corn and (?). I guess with any kind of hard, "pebbly" food(s), you could be taking a "risk". Not really sure exactly, what caused his diverticulitis at that time, but now I only buy the "creamy" pb (which I always liked better anyway).

The correct term in diverticulosis, which is the mere presence of diverticuli, or small outpouncings of the colon. Diverticulitis is when one of these becomes inflammed.
