Did they have ancient telescopes to measure the expansion of the galaxies as we do today? Or did their knowledge come from another source?

I hate to answer questions like this because there are so many answers already (but most of them aren't serious).

Much of early Jewish and Christian cosmology, especially Christian, is based on the Greek view of the universe, the Aristotelian view. The idea of the earth-centered universe. The universe, as they saw it, was a series of concentric spheres, like the layers of an onion. The earth was at the center, surrounded by a sphere containing the moon, then the planets (either 5 or 7 of them depending on when you asked), then the Sun, then the stars. Beyond that was 'heaven', the realm of gods and angels. There were four elements. Earth was the heaviest which is why rocks tried to move towards the center of the universe, then water, then air which floated on top. And fire was the lightest, which is why flames moved upwards. The sun, moon, planets and stars were made of fire.

Early Christianity owes a -lot- to this way of looking at things, which started with the Greeks. This was taught in all the medieval universities. They believed that Satan had power only in the 'sublunary' realm, i.e. the area beneath the moon. Everything outside of that was 'perfect'. The planets and other heavenly bodies moved in perfectly circular orbits, moved by God himself, and the angels.

Well if you believe Genesis, God created the earth as a sort of 'project'. He built the earth and put man on it for some reason, as part of some elaborate 'plan' which he is still carrying out. If you believe that, then obviously the universe was built to go around earth! How could it have existed previously with nothing in the center? So it stood to reason that God created the earth and the universe more or less together.

Dont know what 3000 year old bible you read... Anyway, they did not have telescopes or things ike that, it made sense to them as it does to us that everything has a beggining and an end. The other source would be priests who transfered their knowledge by word of mouth before it was written down. These days science and religion agree upon the point that the universe did not alwats exist The scientists do not believe God was responsible but they are bound to come across proof showing that God did jumpstart the big bang and he is with us today.

If you are really interested in topics like this read "Calculating God" by Robert J. Sawyer.

I believe it's as simple as this. It was a story passed down through the generations by word of mouth and with symbols and early language. The ancients knew the truth but as with all storys even true ones stuff gets added to it and stuff gets taken out and forgotten. By the time we got to written language the put the story together as best they could. The original story in my opinion did come from "other" sources. Those sources gave them the knowledge to create civilization. Thats another story though.

I guess for the same reason that they never mentioned 50 foot tall dinosaurs, said that bats were birds, said that any fish with scales is safe to eat, and never explained how just 40 days of rain could raise the water level 30,000 feet (thats 750 feet per DAY). I think you may not want to start defending the accuracy of the bible. That is now more than ever, a VERY losing proposition.

It is said that the Torah was given to man. The Torah is the first 12 books of the bible. It is said that the universe was created because..it wasn't there before! LOL God wanted it so and so he breathed and spoke and it became so.
Sounds a bit odd, but then again...it is the baisis of creation in almost every single religious ideology...speach and breath.
It was the godhead that always existed...everywhere, encompassing everything...in order for there to be some sort of change 'Goddess' contracted, leaving a void, and spoke/sang creation into existence...while there could be no existence without "God' continuing to exume his energy/essence into this creation at all times, it is the seperation that allows for unique experiences and evolutions to be undergone on our way back to the fount. I've studied many religons and I would suggest Kabbalah to anyone who wished to be able to actively participate in the evolution of their soul in a higher purpose and reunification with 'God/dess.'

im uncertain, yet i think of there is not any longer something interior the bible that asserts God created the Universe is 6 days or 6000 years. the e book of genesis does say that God spoke to a lesser god, and suggested enable us to make guy in our image. and while they got here to the planet it became into discovered void and without choose. so evidently the planet existed, and then Jesus created all issues that are in this planet. jointly as the bible does say he created it in 6 days. Paul does say every day to the Lord is one thousand years to guy. and there is LDS scripture which suggests that that the earth became into no longer formed in 6 days, even nevertheless it became right into a imaginative and prescient of Abraham or Moses that took 6 days to behold the creation. Moses a million: 27 27 And it got here to pass, because of the fact the voice became into nonetheless speaking, Moses forged his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; and there became into no longer a particle of it which he did no longer behold, discerning it by ability of the spirit of God.

God has always existed, but the Bible records his creation - that is the water, man, animals, plants, fish... all things.
There are those who say that the Biblical "day" as recorded in the creation account ( it says the world was created in 6 days) in Genesis is 24 hours. I do not believe that is what it is. I think a day to God is "as a thousand years" as another scripture says. For one who has no beginning and no end (God) I do not think he is confined to our "day" as we know it.
I think those who think that may do so honestly. but are mistaken. If God took 3 billion years to create, it certainly takes nothing away from him - so we should not get hung up on that. If carbon dating proves the Earth is 2 billion years old that is great and I agree with it.
No telescopes, like all scripture, it is God-inspired to men, and Moses, who wrote the Book of Genesis, recorded the creation as God revealed it to him.

They had to try to think of answers for all the unexplained things that people were aware of. This is one of the beautiful things about faith in religion - if it's good God did it for us - if it's bad God did it to punish those that aren't like us. If a seemingly good person has great distress or dies it is for the greater good as God knows what's best.

All questions can be answered by involving God and his angels. If you also believe in hell then we have the devil to blame things on. God can't seem to control the devil because he wants everyone to love him not for his might but for his works and promises. Killing the devil would set a bad example as God would be seen as not giving him/it a second chance???
