the simple definition is: an atheist is a person who doesn't believe in god.

however, for a more detailed (and honest) definition, these days, would be: a person who doesn't believe in god and seems to be pestered quite often by bible-thumpers, born-again chritians, and religious people from other religions as well, to convert to _____ (whatever religion this religions person follows), and has probably heard more than their fair share about burning in hell and satan and how it's not too late to change and save their soul, etc.

Okay seriously, I didn't read everyone's opinions there, but there seems to be some confusion between Atheists and Agnostics, so I'll clear that up for you.

Agnostics DO believe in a higher power or the concept of "god" (it may or may not be monotheistic, meaning that there is only 1 god) but they all admit there's some sort of greater power at work (i.e. everything happens for a reason, just don't know what that reason is)

Athiests on the other hand don't believe in any form of higher power or god, are simply cause and effect type people. The concept of organized religion or any sort of deity is not believed nor accepted. Furthermore, most Athiests have rational and detailed explanations for why he/she has that viewpoint.

Now obviously its impossible to believe in nothing, and an Atheism is a belief structure in itself; you believe that there is no higher power, god, or anything else at work and the universe is just cause and effect.

The word "Atheist" literally means "no god". So this is a person who does not believe that God exists. Many people get them confused with agnostics. The word "Agnostic" literally means "pertaining to no knowledge". This is a person who believes there is not any proof of whether a god exists or not.

While I don't agree with either of these views, I was able to learn about them while I was talking to people about the Bible and learned the literally meaning of there names while taking a medical terminology course.

Rather than link the Wiki definition, I'll tell you what "athiest" means to me.

An athiest is someone who does not believe in the existence of a traditional God. Some athiests believe in a higher power or a spiritual force, but they reject the notion of a sentient being who lives in heaven and controls everything.

Its an individual that, for the most part uses his head (reasoning) in discussing the possibility of God existence. and had reach the conclusion that its not highly improbable, but is absolutely the most illogical to believe in the existence of any God or Devil!
We cannot prove a negative!

A person who does not believe in any gods whatsoever. The prefix a- means not. The word theist means one who believes in God or gods. Therefore atheist means literally not theist.

a·the·ist (ā'thē-ĭst)
n.
One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

I'm sure an atheist can provide a more detailed explanation.

An Atheist is someone who rejects any of the over 8,000 Gods man has created throughout history. They assert there is no separate God--and certainly no proof of any separate God.

Webster Dictionary definition:
A disbelief in the existence of God.

You may want to check the word
agnostic as well.
Webster : Defined as one who holds that we know nothing of God or of an unseen world beyond material phenomena.

Some claim to be atheist and are really agnostic, or vice versa. I hope this helped clarify the term for you.
