There's a mandatory military service of nine months, or an alternative of community service (which is presently more common than military service). There's also a third alternative that has fewer hours spread over 6 years, and the requirement can be put off if you're in school.
It's only mandatory for guys - optional for girls.

not sure about now days but there was a required stint in the military OR in some other government run thing for those that objected to being in the military, along the lines of conservation type of thing.............but like I said am not sure about now................they also wear hair nets which used to make me laugh as a child when we was in Germany, the Brits all clean cut and sorted, with the Germans and their hair nets lol lol

I'm not sure if it still exists today but some European countries have that law, even if there is no war going on and your 18 you have to take the training.
