I was honorably discharged from the USMC as a Sergeant in 2001. I have been thinking about enlisting into the Navy. Any ideas on what the process is. Will I have to go to Navy basic training. Will I keep my rank. If I do go in I want to do SEALS. I completed RECON training in the Marines

You are classified as an OSVET (Other Service Veteren).
You don't go to basic training again, you go to OSVET school.

Basic qualifications other than an Honorable discharge are you must have less than 10 years of total service upon completion of OSVET training. You will at least keep your rank of E-3/4 at least.

First termers are the recruiter priority. He would have to call his Chief recruiter to see if there is an OSVET billet for you and allot depends on your AFQT and how flexable you are in your job description.

There are a dozen or so source ratings for the Navy SEALS. Try not to be too picky with the detailer at MEPS, but so insist on a SEALS source rating. You'll get a chance to try out for them in Basic and also for Navy diver if you want to.

The decision on Basic training is made individually in the Navy for non Navy prior service recruits.

Since you have been out of the military more than 5 years.

You will most likely have to enlist as an E-3.

But, if you enlist for BUD/S, you might be able to enlist as an E-4, with your Recon training.

You have to remember, prior service enlistments, are treated as reenlistments. Not normal enlistments.

And of course, you will have to be less than 28 years old, to start BUD/S.

Waviers can be applied for for those age 29 or 30.

You just sign up and see where it takes you. You will probably have to do a shortened basic training. You would be placed in a prior service company and pretty much rushed through it. You should reatin your rank or be able to rise back to it quickly. You have been out for six years so you may be a little rusty and need some PT. Once through basic you should be able to apply to UDT SEALs School. About two days in, you will wish you were back on Paris Island, but if you can enjoy the rigor, you can do the deed.

Time of separation plays a part in what kind of training you will have to go through, and what kind of pay grade you will have when you enlist again.

Since you are prior service, you have nothing to worry about when talking to a recruiter. You will know if they are giving you BS, and if your re-enlistment code on your DD214 is R1, you are a wet dream to a recruiter. So, as the standard answer on this forum goes, talk to a recruiter. Your situation is unique and requires expertise for proper advice. Make sure they know you want a shot at SEALS, or you won't go back. You don't have much more time to do this. 6 years is a long time for separation.

Good luck.

Not sure about your rank, but you will have to attend basic training for the Navy. Talk to a recruiter and find out, they should have some idea, or at least would have a clue who to ask. (good thing basic for the Navy is shorter than for the Marines) and thank you.

Talk to the Navy Recruiter and he can do all the paperwork. You would not have to go to Navy Boot Camp but may have to take a course in Navy customs and language. He can also tell you the rank you would go in as and what rating (MOS) you would be going in to. Prior Service is not re-enlisting but it is not like going in for the first time either; somewhere in the middle. Easiest thing to do in contact the recruiter.

No, you won't have to complete Navy basic training. Yes, you'll keep your E-5. You'll have to complete a fitness assessment to be considered for SEALs, and if you're 29 or 30, you'll need a waiver.

here's the competitive numbers to get into the SEALs program:
* 500-yard swim using breast or combat side stroke in 7:00-8:30 minutes
* 100 push-ups in 2 minutes
* 100 sit-ups in 2 minutes
* 15-20 pull-ups from a dead hang (no time limit)
* Run 1.5 miles in boots and long pants in 8:30-10:00 minutes

(minimums are lower, but if you want to go to BUD/S, you need to have "competitive numbers")

But in order to even get considered for SEALs, you need to talk to a recruiter.

Most times you drop one rank level, but get it back quickly. Go talk to a recruiter to get all the details. I don't know about boot-camp, but a friend of mine left the Army and went Navy, and was given a PT test, passed it and took a couple weeks of classes to get more accustom to Navy terms and such.

well youd have to do the basic training again, just so they can train you again, and so you get back into the swing of things. as for your rank you probably wouldnt keep your exact same rank. but you wouldnt go back and be an e-1. but you should still have a high rank.
