NEVER use an object to hit a dog. That will just make it aggressive. You have to train the dog and if you leave and he rips things up- crate train him, but never put him the crate as punishment because it's supposed to be a good/safe place for the dog to be while you are away from the house.

Tapping them on the nose isn't a very good way because it's not natural for a dog. Get a prong collar and put a short leash( 1 foot) on and hide. As soon as they start to chew burst out and yell NO no no no no all the way to then( running) and give a short pop on the leash. If you can't watch them then put them in a crate, that way you don't set them up for failure, but catch them every time so they understand that you are serious, not just random.

To fit the collar use the smallest links you can and place it high on the neck behind the ears. it should be snug enough that 1 finger will go between. When you give a pop on the leash it acts like a nip to his neck, which is what mom and Alpha dogs do when a lower dog is misbehaving. Of course you could nip the dog yourself, but you might get a bit of hair in your mouth. For all the obedience training info you will ever need go to www.dogproblems.com I used it for my dog and it's amazing!!! They will help you with everything you need help on with your dog.

I crate trained my dogs and taught them to know what I mean when I TELL them they have done something wrong. I only use the word BAD when they have done something big and I make it overly dramatic. They learned that when I tell them something is bad that they have done something wrong. I have never had to hit my dogs and they have turned out to be very well behaved and could be let out of their crates into a limited area at the age of 2 (they are 3 and 4 now and have free run of the house while I am gone). Hope this helps!

Don't punish train properly. If you don't know how then buy a book on training and learn. Meanwhile crate train your dogs to be in the crate when you aren't around to supervise them. Dog proof your house when you leave, and worse comes to worse put them in the garage when you go out. They are bored and frustrated, walk and exercise them more to work off their frustration of being locked inside. Learn how to combat separation anxiety by reading up on it. Make sure they have enough of their own toys to chew on. But whatever you do DON'T HIT YOUR DOGS, one day they'll turn agressive if you hit them, it will also make them wary of you.

Neither.

Supervise your dogs, and when you can't supervise they need to be in their crates.

When you see them going for something they shouldn't tell them NO sharply to stop them. Wait a few seconds and then offer one of their toys, praise lavishly when they take it.

Also if you see your dog chewing on its toys on its own, praise it lavishly. The dog may get up and come over to you, but that's ok, the dog has gotten the message that you like it when it chews on its own toys.

How many toys do your dogs have? To many toys can lead a dog to believe everything is its toy. Limit the toy collection to 3 or 4 favorites for awhile.

Last but certainly not least, exercise, exercise, exercise. A tired dog is a good dog.

You do not hit your dog with sticks. That is called abuse. You find some appropriate toys for them and teach them to chew on those things and you make sure they get enough attention and exercise so they don't have a lot of extra energy and boredom.

Watch The Dog Whisperer. But seriously, don't listen to the first person. DO NOT smack your dogs. That just frightens them and they start learning bad habits. If you're having a terrible time, ring your vet and ask them for ways you can teach the dogs not to chew without you becoming violent or harmful. Vets are the ones who can give you this info.

They are like children, if you don't teach them, how are they to know they are doing anything wrong? would you hit a child with a wooden spoon or a shoe? I hope not. Take the time to train them properly and you will have wonderful trustworthy pets.

You could try the "Bitter Apple" and when you catch them chewing spray it on what they are chewing. My best advice would be to look into "the Dog Whisper". Cesar is awesome. I also think that crate training is great, if started at a puppy age. If your dogs are older it could freak them out.

You should never hit your dog whenever they are bad. Also, when they misbehave, you should scold them right away. They won't remember what they did before. Your dogs are probably bored at home. Do you exercise them? If you do everyday, do you give them some chews to keep them busy?
