I want to start walking/jogging/running, and I want to know how long a mile is. How many steps approx. is a mile? How can I measure how long one is without actually measuring it?

Go to Wal-mart or Target or someplace & buy a "pedometer". They're like, $10. or $15.- & they clip unto your belt or waistband and count the distance for you... OTHERWISE; most women's footsteps are about 2 feet; and there are 5,280 feet in a mile...So for you, a mile should be about 2,640 steps... Good luck with your workout! :)

Depends how much proof they need. kilometer means 1000 metres. An imperial mile is 1760 yards (I suppose a USA mile might be a bit different). A metre is about 10% longer than a yard (39 and a bit inches against 36 inches) (show them a tape measure). So a 1000 metres is about 1100 yards, which is less than 1760 yards so a mile is longer.

a mile is 16 city blocks...or 4 times around the track at any school...some city parks have a route all measured out for people to walk or run that is a mile...

you could use one of those measuring things that has a wheel at the end to measure the distance...you could also count how many steps it takes you to walk say 20 feet, then multiply that by 264 for the number of steps you would take in a mile☺

Go to a football field and walk it from goal line to goal line while counting your steps. You can also do the same thing jogging and/or running. The number you get is for 300 feet, so multiply that by 17.6 to get the number for a mile.

They sell an inexpensive meter you can hook to your belt or shoe or strap to your ankle and it will give you instructions on how to set it for your steps. I bought one at wal-mart a few years ago.
Another method, depending on where you live, (I believe) a mile is equal to 16 city blocks. 5280 ft.
If you drive, you could check the route you will walk with your odometer.
Or measure the stride you will be walking and divide 5280 by that number. Example my stride app. 24" or 2'. would be 2640 steps round trip or 1320 steps ea. way.

you have two options. If you're going to walk/run in your area, drive around and take note of various land marks to use as reference points. Then mark the speedometer for mile or half mile marks. I think telephone poles/electric poles are about 20 to the mile.

Or, buy a cheap pedometer. You can pick one up for 5 to 12 bucks. But be sure to keep the instructions. They all seem to be digital today and can be difficult to operate if you don't have the instructructions to fall back upon.

well 5,280 ft, 1600m
get a pedometer to measure how far you went.
either that or drive around the block or down a street until you reach a mile.(read odometer)

You can either use your car's odometer to measure a mile or if you have a three foot stride, you can count 1760 strides.
