The entrance from your stomach to your esophagus is not at the top end of the stomach-- the part closest to your head--but further down. The food goes straight down and then to your left. Any air you swallow goes to the top, above the level where the esophagus comes in, if you are sitting or standing. It does that simply because it is lighter. That is on your left. The outlet to your stomach is on your right. So the food goes down, then left, then right.

If you have a lot of gas in your stomach that collects in the top part, it is easier to belch it out if you are standing and lean to your left. Since the air rises, leaning to the left puts it right where it can get out of the esophagus easily. This is also a nice thing to know if you are burping a baby.
