Basically,it's basing the routines and activities in the classroom on the needs of the individual child, not a preplanned curriculum or routines. You would look for staff who respond to a baby's crying and try to figure out what is wrong. They might notice that a baby is dumping all the toys, be aware that this is an important developmental task, and provide some fill and dump activities. They don't sit all the babies down for any kind of Circle time, instead they sing with a baby as they change their diapers. They would not require a child to participate in an art activity. Instead they would provide interesting materials for any child who is interested to explore. They would notice if a baby needed some time on its own, or if a toddler was trying to play with others but didn't know how.
Responsive care-giving focuses on the needs of individual children. It requires a staff that understands child development as it applies to individual children. It also works best in a primary caregiver model where a baby is the primary responsibility of one of the adults in the room and is usually cared for by that adult.
