If there is a way to contact the owners, do that and let them know about the lesion and ask them what they would like you to do for her.

How long do you reckon that it's taken to look that bad? A week a month? if it looks like it's taken time to get that bad then chances are the owners are neglecting the dog. Can you cut out the matted hair so you can get in and clean it out really well? It doesn't sound like you need to go to an emergency vet, just clean it really well with peroxide and put some neosporin on it. When the owners come home explain what you did. Tell them how bad the ear had gotten and you had no choice but to clip out the hair. If they seem mad that you did that then they might need to be reported for neglect.

Cockers are prone to ear infections because the ear sits so close to the head thus not much air gets into the ear.
You could try LOGIC ear cleaner which will soften any wax and clean out the ear with a sensitive baby wipe. The dog will require to have its ears clipped inside and out and this should be done as soon as possible. It may be that the infection is deep routed and the vet will treat with antibiotic..

try to stop the bleeding first. then clean it off as best you can. do not forget to tell the owner about it. you do not have to take her to an emergency vet unless she loses a lot of blood. just to be safe you should hold her muzzle closed while cleaning and trying to stop the bleeding so you dont get bit. do not let her scratch or nibble at her ear either. hope this helps!

it sounds like she either A got in a fight with another animal or B. has been scratching it a lot from fleas or something. I wouldn't take her to an emergency vet, it doesn't sound like an emergency. You want to stop the bleeding though. Call the owner and see what they say about it, he/she may have already asked the vet about it or knows what it's from.

No, I have a cocker spainel and his fur gets huge matted clumps all the time. I cut it off with a pair of scissors but make sure you dont cut his skin.

I don't mean to be evasive, but if YOU are dogsitting, then that is YOUR responsibility. If you are linked to a professional outfit, call your manager, as there wil be a protocol for this sort of thing. If you are doing it as a favour, call the owner, or go ahead and do what YOU feel is right.
