You have to check and see if the purchase is legal in both states, then only long guns can be bought in another states from the one in which you reside.

GCA1968
(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver --

(3) any firearm to any person who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the licensee's place of business is located, except that this paragraph (A) shall not apply to the sale or delivery of any rifle or shotgun to a resident of a State other than a State in which the licensee's place of business is located if the transferee meets in person with the transferor to accomplish the transfer, and the sale, delivery, and receipt fully comply with the legal conditions of sale in both such States (and any licensed manufacturer, importer or dealer shall be presumed, for purposes of this subparagraph, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, to have had actual knowledge of the State laws and published ordinances of both States), and (B) shall not apply to the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;

You really need an opinion from the Attorney General's office. But I would guess that if you may legally purchase a firearm in New York State, you will be OK to bring one back from Vermont.

However, I believe you will have to submit the same registration to the state of New York that you would if you had purchased it in New York.

But like I say, this is simply by guess and logic. We all know that laws are not always sane or logical. Rather than risk getting into trouble taking advise from strangers on Yahoo, make a call to the AG's office and get the straight dope. And ask for it in writing.

Here's NY state law on guns:

A non-resident citizen may possess a rifle or shotgun in New York, as long as it is unloaded while being transported. No person may carry, possess or transport a handgun in or through the state unless he has a valid New York license.
