i just would like to make something and have had difficulties in the past making them perfect

I say make the cupcakes because its alot easier and cuter, plus you can make as many as you want to make them look full on the table. Also, they are alot easier to take home, as with cake you have to cut up and put in foil or whatever. Just decorate the cupcakes with different frostings and things.

I think cake would be fun if not practical. I attended a friend's son's first birthday and he ate what he wanted and then smeared the rest of his slice of cake all over the table of his highchair and it was all over his face. It made for good pictures and videos. It was very cute. Also, consider the paper from a cupcake. Could it possibly be a choking hazard?

I had cupcakes at my daughter's first birthday party, but I also had a minicake for her and another one for picture purposes.

cupcakes are trendy right now, even at wedding receptions :) I don't see why you couldn't serve them!
