I use both, I think it depends on which words come before and after it if I remember way back to when I was a lass at school, lol:-D
I'm 99.9% sure that he or she stank, but, it stunk - if that makes sense to you?

It stunk to high hell.
The air stank of sulphur.
I use both as well, I guess it all depends on the subject, or the user's preference/choice of words.

stink, stank, stunk:
The past tense we use in English is the one in the middle called the "Simple past" or "Simple past tense"

I'm not 100% but I think 'stunk' is the simple past (or preterite) and 'stank' is the past participle. Lemme just check though I'll get back to you....

stank is past tense. stunk is past participle.
