I use both, I think it depends on which words come before and after it if I remember way back to when I was a lass at school, lol:-D
I'm 99.9% sure that he or she stank, but, it stunk - if that makes sense to you?

It stunk to high hell.
The air stank of sulphur.
I use both as well, I guess it all depends on the subject, or the user's preference/choice of words.

I'm not 100% but I think 'stunk' is the simple past (or preterite) and 'stank' is the past participle. Lemme just check though I'll get back to you....
