Everyone should answered as cardboard or paper, I agree to at first because it can recycle to use again. But I have the different idea How much you cut the forest down for paper?, how many times you can recycle it?

Plastic and styrofoam using are the new choices from oil production and much more enough as human use oil for engine. You just manage the usage and destroy it , we will manage the environment as well better than destroy forest as it is the cause of the world warm.

brown unbleached recycled paper or cardboard is the way to go. Plastic and styrofoam are not biodegradable friendly.

Re-use generally, difficult to say exactly not knowing what you're packing, old polystyrene, plastic bottles, yogurt pots old shredded paper (don't shed new because it can't be recycled once shredded), egg boxes. Keep it lightweight and as small as poss to lower the emmissions related to transportation.

If you're really keen bear in mind what will happen to the stuff at the other end, Will they re-use, recycle, or just bin it?

Cardboard cuz it can be recycled. And if its breakable i think old newspaper is great. If it is something you are sending to someone as a gift and its breakable why not wrap it in a pretty towel or something else like that?

plastic.....if they are not irresponsibly disposed of but recycled to other uses such as "platic lumber"..Even if they are just disposed in landfills, it does not excrete toxic chemicals unlike paper or cardboard to the ground water.
cardboards are no's! They use up vast woodlands.
styrofoam are no's too! processing it uses CFC's before but replaced by HCFC's(95 % less destructive) but are still the major destroyerr of the ozone layer.

use your shredded paper as confetti "peanuts" and when done packaging, then use looseleaf paper, and take a washable marker and write, recycle all packaging products and place it inside the box as a note, next to the package, write it in an obvious color to draw attention to itself.
