Hey! My 8 week old golden has diarrhea, I've heard it's normal but he's pooping a lot. The poop is well...soft. I'm a little worried so I was just wondering if you guys have any advice for me. Should I take him to the wet? How long will this last? Is it his food? : ( Please help!

Just adding, he plays fine, eats fine, drinks plenty of water. I took him to the vet just last week, he is de-wormed once, got his first shots.

It could be the kind of food you're feeding him, it could be worms, it could be illness...

If he hasn't been to the vet yet, he should be going in about now anyway for a checkup and to get started on his vaccinations - mention the diarrhea when you go in. If he's had a checkup in the last week or so, call the vet and ask for advice.

Check for blood in the stool, if yes go to vet.
Is the dog receiving necessary worm care from a licensed Vet?
Are their any other symptoms, e.g. lack of appetitie, inactivity ecetera, if yes go to Vet.

Otherwise,

Dog diarrhea is a very common problem, with multiple causes. Often, it's a symptom of mild food poisoning which can result when your dog eats garbage or other bacteria-filled treasures he's found while off leash.

To begin with, dietary changes can be very helpful and effective. Sometimes reducing your pet's food for a day or two can help to quickly clear up diarrhea. Another technique is to feed your dog a homemade, bland diet until the symptoms have passed. In cases of large intestine-related diarrhea, a high-fiber diet may prove effective. Certain homeopathic remedies and supplements can also provide relief for dogs experiencing diarrhea.

At 8 weeks old the pup should not have the run's at all. I would take a stool sample into your vets to have it checked. Also what you feed your pup will also determine what comes out! If your feeding her a puppy food of low quality then it is showing in her poop!

My /golde's including my 12 week old pups are firm and well formed. Not runny or soft at all. I feed them Canidae akll life stages, even my pup. If your puppy food has corn, wheat or soy it may the reason for the loose poop!

I would still bring a stool sample into your vets to have them check for any problems!
Good luck with your Golden Pup!

when puppies are de-wormed it causes the stool to be loose. The de-worming medication basically flushes out the system causing the diarrhea or soft stool. If it doesn't get any better give your puppy some canned "Libby's" pumpkin. The vitamin "A" and Fiber in the pumpkin will cause the stool to firm up. And if the stool still doesn't firm up then take a stool sample to the Vet and have them check it for parasites. Puppies are prone to parasites as they pick up everything off the ground and chew it. They can get parasites in your own yard in fact. My puppies were checked for parasites as well yesterday and it came back negative.

Hiya Sharon Maybe the diet you are feeding her may be a little rich for her little tummy. I have a rori everytime I fed her complete she puked and looked very sad. My mama suggested changing her diet to HILLS sensitive tummies, which has worked a treat. Also when u changed her food did u wean her gradually? What I mean is when changing a dog's diet u cant just change it, u gota do it gradually...by mixing hte new food in with her old diet, slowly getting her body use to the new food. Science Plan, Eukanaba (sorry bout the spelling) r fantastic sources of food, which contain fresh ingredients, so the SCIENCEPlAN may just be riding her body of the sugars etc from the old food Hope this has helped. Good luck. x

You golden pup more than likely has a parasite of some type. I doubt it has much to do with the food your feeding it our nerves/stress. Sigh. Anyway, take a fecal sample to your vet and they can run an in-house test to determine what parasite is living in your dogs intestines. Test should be around $25.00, meds...roughly $25.00. Plus they will probably charge an exam and office visit fee. Good luck to you and your pup!

If you just got this puppy it is likely just nerves/stress from leaing the nest and having his life turned upside down causing it. Did you leave him on the same food the breeder had him on? A change in foods will cause it too. He should be on the same food until he is adjusted to his surroundings and comfortable.
I would not go running to the vet yet. You can give him some cooked sweet potato to get him over the loose stool.

It could be different things. How long has he had diarrhea? Have you changed his food? You could call your vet and ask them what to do about it. Most vets wont make your bring your pets in unless they think its necessary. I would really recommend calling your vet and asking for there advice because he is so young. Give him plenty of water as diarrhea could make them become dehyrdrated

I hope he has had his parvo shots, if not then he probably has parvo. The Parvo virus can live for 6 months to a year in the yard or anywhere on the ground. It can also live in an animal that is just a carrier. So if your puppy walked somewhere with-in 6 months after an infected dog or a carrier he can very easily have been infected. It may not be too late to get him on meds, so get him to the vet.

My older golden also has a loose stool. Not diarrhea, just soft and loose and lots and lots of it. I think it is related to her drinking lots of water. She goes to the vet regularly and is healthy. Maybe it's a golden thing.
