When you first start as a flight instructor, you will make anywhere from $10,000-$25,000. When you go to a regional you will start out right around $20,000 and top out around $110,000 after about 18 years. At the majors you will start out around $30,000 and top out around $200,000.
As you stay with a company your pay will increase each year. When you leave one company to go to another, you will go back to the first year pay for that particular company. So you can go from making $100,000 at a regional to making $30,000 at a major.

Most here have a fair idea of the theoretical stepping stones, but if I read your question correct you are asking "average salary" I would look at it by getting an idea of how long you stay at certain salary levels as well as possible reductions from time to time changing companies or equipment upgrades. If you find gainful employment by the time your 25 you have until you are 60 to make it all work out. If you average out your life income over those 35 years with savings plans, stock and 401K you might not do to badly if you are a smart investor. A lot of top pay scale level pilots I know have sideline businesses trying to maintain a lifestyle. Like anything else in life, it's all about hard work, dedication and spirit. Simply asking an average salary for a commercial pilot here will get a lot of answers as everyone is not on the same stepping stone.

It really depends on how far you are down your career path?
Just starting out you will be on between 20k - 35k. Then when you hit the regional airlines 35k - 50k. Then when you make it to the major airlines 50k - 250k. Then maybe a select few might make more than that if they have been at a company for a zillion years!
If you are after making money. Aviation is the wrong industry to pursue considering it costs almost $100,000 to get all your ratings and if you happen to slip up once in your medical your career is over.
One of the main contributing factors to the pilot shortage in the world at the moment!
