the 5.0 isn't always faster, but it is a better engine and a better choice for a performance car because its much easier to build.

If you take 2 cars that are exactly the same and put a 5.0 engine from a 90 stang in one and a 4.6 from a 99 stang in the other, the one with the 4.6 would win because due to technology it makes more hp and tq. Now, if you take the same senario and take a 5.0 and a 4.6, both built today from the ford factory, the car with the 5.0 would win. Not because its bigger, a little known fact about the 4.6 is that it is a 302 just like the 5.0. I own a 2004 cobra and I know that when guys are super serious about drag racing (guys that are running 1500+hp and tq), they trade in there stock cobra engine for the same exact engine in 5.0. The reason for this is because with the 5.0 they are able to bore out the (insert name here, I forgot the name of the engine part) to .30 which gives you a lot more to work with. I am not a engine gu-ru so maybe some of you mechanical masters can fill in the blanks for me.

The newer 4.6 engines are pretty potent, and will pretty much beat the tar out of the 5.0s. But when the 4.6 first got put into the Mustang (1996), it had 225 horsepower (same as the 5.0), but the torque curve was real 'peaky' (meaning you had to have the engine revs high to keep the power coming). The old 5.0 engines had a very flat torque curve which made them feel a lot faster than the 4.6s.
The newer 4.6 engines are no joke. Dual overhead camshafts on some of them, they will flat out run.

The newer 4.6's are faster. However there is a whole other world of parts available for the 5.0's. Not to mention they are much easier to work on.

I would imagine that some are and some aren't. Some of the 4.6's are Cobra engines and have a supercharger on them. A lot of the 5.0 and the 4.6 have been modified, so you never know what's going on under the hood.
good luck.

It all depended on the horsepower..... you cant say yes to either, some were, some werent. When you have a 225HP 5.0 versus a 250HP 4.6 then vice versa...... more horsepower = more power and speed.... bottom line.

The 1987 to 1995 5.0L Mustangs were fatser than the 1996 to 1998 4.6L Mustangs stock. The 1999 to 2004 Mustangs were faster than the old 5.0L Mustangs, and the 2005+ 4.6L Mustangs are faster than the 1999 to 2004 4.6L Mustangs.

They went to the 4.6L in 96. The 5.0's were faster until the 99 came out with PI heads and 260hp.

divide 50 by 46 and get1.08 x the projected 70 MPH= 76 MPH. BUT you will accelerate slower, over rev the engine all over town and have less pulling power. unless you plan to ride across 3 states unstop you will better off with the stock gearing. Nothing is free and the very short pieces where you can actually go top speed will make you not want to ride the sluggish bike you made.
