I am thinking about going into the Navy ROTC program to study meteorology, I would have to serve 6 years upon graduation. What jobs do navy meteorologists do? Do I get to be on a ship?
Thanks.

ROTC produces Line Officers.. SWO, Aviation and Nuke. the only way you would get to be assigned METOC is if you were found NPQ for URL. Even with a meteorology degree, expect to be picked up for SWO.. and you do NOT find out your designator until just before you graduate and have already incurred the commitment.

Navy METOC Officers do less meteorology and more oceanography. Weather guessing is being handled more and more by the AF now, although there are still a few billets left on the Big Decks.

The same job they do for your local TV station... predict the weather.

Think they want to launch a bunch of planes from a carrier right before a hurcaine hits the task force?

Don't think so.

It's more important to know the weather in the military than in your home town I would suspect.

g-day!

You may or may not be on a ship. Weather is a concern the world over for daily operational planning and execution in all branches.

you do meteorology...and you MAY be attached to a ship but weather-guessers are a separate command and that is a very good thing

You're a weatherman, just like a civilian.
They're on ships as well as shore, just like almost every other rate in the Navy.

They evaluate and predict the weather and disseminate their findings to command personnel. I suspect that they are ashore.

They investigate meteors.:)

A good size meteor can smash a ship to bits in seconds.
