How SMALL is your child??

Depending on that..I am not sure why you would want them out there doing that instead of enjoying their childhood ANYWAYS.

Perhaps volunteer opportunities might be a bit much for a small child, educational activities might be a better fit. The local library usual offers book reading groups for kids. Promoting reading in a non-school environment can be a great way to start involving your child in group activities with other kids while learning at the same time.

When my son was little we used to do stuff like make cookies together and take them to the homeless shelter. My son also would save pennies thru the year to give to the Salvation Army at Christmas time (we would cash them in at the bank before hand so that the Sal. Army wouldn't have a slew of pennies to deal with). When he was older we would collect at Christmas via the Salvation Army kettles, and we would give out tootsie pops to the people who gave. Those days are gone and I really miss them. Doing things together that benefit other people is so rewarding! He is an only child but has turned out to be a very giving and thoughtful person, thank God.

I had my kids save their pennies, raise some money doing chores for seniors or others in our neighbourhood, those who could afford a few cents, (if they couldnt the kids helped them anyhow raking leaves etc) and then I chipped in $100 or more if I could afford it, and we had a special day shopping for xmas amalgemated - buying toys for kids less fortunate. We always bought baby clothing too because its often something people dont think of.

Sometimes my kids friends wanted to come along too.

In the fall when it started to get cold we collected old jackets and hats and scarves from neighbours and friends and went downtown and handed them out to street people.

They may not yet be able to volunteer on their own but you can and take them along and set a good example, good question by the way.

It depends on how old your "small" child is. Any child can help clean up the local park by picking up trash, planting a tree or flowers or even grass. They can help clean up the school yard, the library yard, or the community center's yard. All you need to do is get permission and go for it. It is a good service and learning project.

Oh, tons. For one, they (with an adult's help) organize a fund or clothes drive and collect around their neighborhood for those in need and donate it to either the Red Cross, Little Sisters Of The Poor, (if there's one in your area), and they could also have a bake sale for donations.
Be aware, that if your little one or whoever decides to do this say in front of a grocery store like the Brownies G.S. cookies, then most likely you would want to call your County Clerk's office and inquire as to whether or not a permit for solicitation is required and how to conduct the "drive." Koolaid, lemonade drives for donations is another. Don't know how old the child is but that should get you started. good luck and hope she/he is successful and God Bless you and them both!

Girlscouts is an excellent way to do community service.

There are food drives, adopt a spot, angle tree, pet tree, bag of love, sister program. All kinds of stuff! And that's just in the next 3 months! :)

consider GS, as it's a wonderful program to instill great values and life skills!

Research your area to see if there is a Meals on Wheels program. If you are not familiar with this, it is volunteering a little time to deliver prepared meals to the elderly or homebound patients. I have done this for years and I take both of my children. The people we deliver to are just thrilled to see the children. Just a thought!

I'm not sure about community service, but you could have your child donate some old toys to a local charity.
