She just came home this morning from getting spayed and she's hiding. She didn't eat anything (I put out her favorite wet food). She's been hiding for about 4 hours now. Should I look for her or let her alone? She won't come when I call.

When cats don't feel well, they hide. Leave her alone and let her heal. She'll be fine by tomorrow. She may not want to eat till tomorrow also, just keep water out for her and give her whatever love you can...

Any pet will be scared and sore after the ordeal of spaying or neutering. Some will hide some will moan and groan some will lay around each has their own individual way of dealing with the ordeal.

Leave out food and water just keep an eye on the food if it is not dry food to make sure it is not drying out and change it. So small amounts of what I call wet food is best for now. Also leave a few of the treats your pet loves the most. Eating a few treats is better than nothing. But also expect the pet to eat nothing for a day or even two it is possible. If your going on day three with no eating or drinking call the vet for some advise!

Another important thing is to make sure the pet is not licking the operation spot. The pet may be hiding out but just keep an eye on him/her and make sure the operation spot is not being picked at. Most vets will give you a halo a cone shaped protector that you place around your pets neck like a collar and it extends out to keep the pet from being able to reach the operation spot. I have the time to stay home when any of my pets that were spayed or neutered and have never had to use it but it is a lifesaver if you have to leave the pet for work or an errand. Most pets do not like the halo and it is traumatic so if you can be there to keep an eye on the pet and not use it then this helps lessen the stress they are going through.

Summing it up all pets act differently, and just be there to give words of encouragement and lots of love and remember to call the vet if your worried. Any good vet or vet staff will be happy to answer your questions and ease your concerns. My dog Liberty stayed on the couch for a whole day and groaned constantly, I brought her water and bits of food and even camped out on the floor next to the couch. So just be patient and loving and let your pet know your there for him/her!!!!

You need to leave her alone if she is in the house and safe. She is sore, confused and probably thinks poorly of you for taking her. Never mind. She will get over it and you did the right and responsible thing in having her neutered. Sometimes the anaestetic will make a pussy ill if they try to eat. I suggest you have clean water on hand and perhaps a little dry food for her. Put the wet food away until she comes out to you. It will go off and there is no sense in that. Just be careful ... after any surgery, for pets or people, we are all tender and need to be handled carefully and to rest. Just take it easy. They would not have discharged her from the vet's if she was in any way in serious trouble.

All the best to the little sweetie and to you.

Cheers

Lisa

I've cared for plenty of cats, post-spay/neuter surgery and they all act that way. It's normal. She is still coming to from the anesthesia and really shouldn't eat immediately or she'll throw up. She's probably also a little scared and in pain. If she still won't drink any water 24 hours post surgery, you should probably call the vet just to check with him/her. Otherwise, just let her be and she'll come out in her own time.

Leave her alone for a while. She's probably still dopey from the anesthetic. Make sure she has fresh water nearby, and try putting a bit of food out for her again tonight. If she doesn't seem to be feeling better in the morning, call the vet and see what he/she advises.

I'd check up on her every now and then to make sure she's ok, but the rest of the time I'd leave her alone. She's had a tremendous (but necessary!) shock to her system and needs time to get over it in peace.

Just make sure she has food (has the vet given you instructions on feeding after surgery?) and clean water easily available. Also, does she have a favourite blanket you can leavenear her?

Don't worry about her, it's a common thing. :-)

Its normal. Cats don't feel good after this surgery. She may sleep and lay down a lot. Don't bother her. Leave a little bit of food out in case she wants to eat.
