When you start looking at the cost of travel, you need to keep in mind that your friend will have to buy a return ticket - not one way. As an Australian your friend cannot stay in the US indefinitely, and US immigration will expect him/her to have a ticket to get back home. So you're raising money for a return air ticket which makes it much more expensive. This will actually be quite a long and expensive trip as your friend will need to fly from Hobart to Melbourne, to get a connecting international flight to Los Angeles, and then a flight from LA to Charlotte, NC (that's if there is one). A return ticket Economy/Coach ticket will be in the vicinity of AU$3,500. That's at today's prices, air tickets go up in price regularly and it's difficult to say how much it will cost in a year or two.
