If your underage child came home with a tattoo? I am proud of my ink, but I am already telling my five year old that she better not think that just because Mommy has tattoos, she'll be allowed to get them before she turns 18. I'm not having it! I am so tired of seeing these CHILDREN, who only have a couple more years until they become legal asking the dumbest questions...
*nasaly whine*"How can I convince my parents to let me get a tattoo?" "Where can I get a tattoo without my parents permission?" "Is it okay for me to tattoo myself?" "I really want a tattoo, but I'm only 11..." etc, etc, so on and so on.
AS BAD as I wanted a tattoo when I was growing up, I waited until I was TWENTY to get the one I thought I wanted and I STILL ended up getting that one covered up because I out grew the "lizard love" phase... I am much happier with my Celtic cross.
I digress. Personally, I will be a believer in corporal punishment if either of my kids come home with ink before their 18th bday. You?

Sweetheart, I am well-aware of there being mature and BRILLIANT teenagers. I am glad that you love your ink, but I still think it would have done you good just to wait a COUPLE more years. My nieces(well, my man's nieces-we're not married yet) both got some very well-done ink before their 18th birthdays. I STILL think it would have been smarter to wait!

Love this question, because it is a issue that I am dealing with right now. I have a few tatoos. I also have body peircings, all hidden. Have to take one out before I deliver. My son is now 16 and he wants a tatoo so bad. He uses my tatoos as an argument to why he should have his. My answer is when he gets on his own, makes his own money then he will buy it and not me. My mother did not pay for mine and I will not pay for his. In this state, you have to be 18 anyway. I suggested that he try henna for the next couple of years to see if it would be something that he really wants. He is pouty about it, but he will NOT get it on my dime or his father's.

I love my ink as well. I currently have 13 tattoos, and I absolutely waited until I was 18 to get my ink done. I think parents who let their kids do this, have no control over the things that their under aged kids do and need to get a better grasp of that. There is no telling where some of these kids are getting their tattoos done and some could eventually end up with diseases due to the conditions of how the tattooing tools are kept, cleaned and stored. When I have kids, I will surely lay down the law about what is wrong and what is right and let them know their possible consequences of what could happen to them if they do something like not waiting till they are of legal age to get a tattoo and looking in their options about the shops they go to. They always want to make sure that they can get what they want without having to sacrifice their health. Also, great work, is absolutely not cheap.

I have 5 tattoos currently, and many more in the planning process (I wait at least a year, just mulling my design over before I even talk to my artist about it). I also have my first child on the way. The great thing about kids is that they don't have any preconceived notions about tattoos, they're just fascinated by them. I plan to raise my children to know that body art is a wonderful thing, but I will also be drilling in the idea that I will not let them get tattooed before they turn 18, and I will go into horrific detail about how they will be punished if they get a tattoo behind my back and I find out. Frankly, there is no excuse for a minor to get a tattoo.
Some people will say "Oh, it's ok if it's a memorial tattoo for their grandmother or something", but...uh...their grandma is going to be just as dead when they are 18, and if it's still important to them to get the tattoo, then good.

I do agree with you, but there are some underage "kids" who really do think about this and are well educated and prepared before getting inked. Take ME for example, I'm only 16 and got my tattoo this summer. I spent a year and a half looking into designs, checking out different shops with my parents, and I talked to so many artists about this. I went in prepared and I don't see anything wrong with getting tattooed underaged if you do your homework on it. This is something that will be with me for life & I know that I will never regret it.

I agree with you 1000% !!
They are all so anxious to get their tattoos and they say "i will love this forever blah blah" Well, if they are so convinced that they will love it forever, why don't they wait 2 years and get it when they are good and legal? 2 years is hardly a drop in the bucket when you are talking about "forever"!
I got my 1st tattoo when I was 23 and I am soooo happy I waited! When I think back to what I wanted when I was younger, and what I was into, I am NOTHING like that now! The teenage years are such formative and ever changing times that I don't know how you could decide on one thing and stick with it forever!
The parents who give their permission for this nonsense are RIDICULOUS and the kids who get without their parents consent are idiots IMHO.
Check out my question on a similar subject...

I could not agree any more with that statement. I mean what if a 15 year old gets a tatoo of a clown or something and then hates it? It's not even about not liking the tatoo, it's just that the teens are still growing and have crazy wacked up ideas in there heads. They are "wise fools"

well, when i do have kids, i know i would not have a say in that matter. my fiance' is a tattoo artist. honestly i think kids should wait until they are 21. if they can't wait until then, make sure it's put in a spot that can be covered, for jobs etc....... i have 10, and love em' all.

I told my daughters, "Think before you ink". They did and the oldest STILL regreted her first one.
Once it is done, it is done, but don't come crying to me if you don't like it later is what I told them about getting one done underage.
