It is a social idea that is exacerbated by movies and TV and emphasis on the idea that you cannot be a "whole person" with being attached to another person. For some strange reason, it has become associated with being "mature" and the "popular" thing to do. Having friends of the opposite and same gender is a good thing because it prepares you for social interaction in real life (life after school). Romantic relationships in school are really just training on how to interact appropriately in a monogamous society, even though they are transitory and basically otherwise meaningless.

It's common to feel 'alone' when you don't have a significant other, due to common beliefs in our culture and our primitive instincts. It takes a strong person to understand that Independence is a much better trait than a bf/gf.

because they allow the media and public opinion dictate. everything is centered around couples. also some feel a partner validates them.. they are uncomfortable being unattached. people have to learn to be comfortable with themselves..and get to know themselves before taking on a partner. they feel unattractive or unwanted if they are single. and this is soooo far from the truth.

It's not that I can't get through life alone. Girlfriends and boyfriends offer love and support that few other people can. Life is a lot easier and more enjoyable with someone else, at least in my opinion.

I always wondered that too, most girls out here HAVE to have one or they think they aren't important. I've seen girls with guys they don't even like, but because my best friend has one I have to have one too. Don't get me wrong I do have a boyfriend but only because I love him and not because I think I need one... before him I was single and didn't rush relationships.

The age old story of peer pressure, it is the collective of the masses, why are we not allowed to use crude language?, or, why must we wear a tie to work? It is what society dictates...
