All depends on one's value system. A real, genuine Christian, places him or her self upon the sacrificial alter of spiritual martyr, daily. But; a false or phony "christian", sacrifices him or her self, for the cause EXterior "show" or performance religion. Living his or her life - based on performance rather, than the GRACE of God. The false "Christian" feels, he or she MUST prove themselves worthy of the GRACE of God by scoring "brownie" points with God for acceptance; meanwhile, not realizing that God's grace is UNconditional !!!

Actually, in every account I've read of martyrs, they had escaped death many times at the hands of their enemies before they finally were killed. Most were held prisoner long before their deaths.

They do not martyr themselves. They are killed for their refusal to bow to any god except the God of the bible.
