an application is needed first/ talking state level or feds--need to be 21 -37 for feds--
1. a state test after application
2. most states know that a high school education is bottom or ged
3. since this is a requirement to testing you will have a test geared at h/s level and for the field of correctionscounting(adding number and sub) ability to read and comrehend what was given in reading material on test
4. do not study for this test it is an entry test and easy--they want to know if you can follow instructions and do the math(add and subtract)
5. physical agility test--run--situp-push ups
6. pass and go to academy-in alabama you have to be apost certified each year to maintain a correctional standard and status--first aid-cpr-firing shot gun and pistol / min of 70 in each area to pass
state fderal and county or city tests are all different but have a statndard to meet qualifications-
alabama is a 12 week academy live in 4 days per week 10 hours a day working and study about what corrections is need to be 19 to apply--check other states, county, city, etc and feds--good luck-i have never seen an unemployment line in 42 years and always could find work in a correctional setting anywhere--not many people are interested in this line of work--too bad i have had the same inmates with me working for me etc for the last 32 years (some have died, some released, some will never get out--retire on oct1st--good field to get into

The previous poster gave an excellent answer, but it's only going to apply to that specific jurisdiction. Each agency has different requirements, so the best bet is to check your particular state's web site. There should be a link to whatever your corrections agency is called.

Al is right it depends on the jurisdiction and what facility you will be an employee of: There are actually minimal requirements for "some facilities" SOME.
