Road tax for cars first registered on or after 1st March 2001 is based on a car's CO2 emissions under the EC combined fuel consumption cycle.
The new "Band G" applies to all cars (4x4s or not) with CO2 emissions greater than 225g/km and registered on or after 23rd March 2006. Cars registered between 1st March 2001 and 22nd March 2006 are taxed as in Bands A-F only (i.e greater than 225g/km is still Band F).
The cost for cars in Band G is currently £300, rising to £400 in March 2008.

For cars first registered before March 2001, there are two bands based on engine capacity: up to 1549cc and above 1549cc.
