Social etiquette is a thing of the past it seems. Just respond with something like "I would appreciate if you didn't talk about my sister like she is not here." or just walk away. Remind your sister that she is loved and many people are just ignorant.

People are rude because their parents didn't teach them any better. The best response is, "That's actually a very rude question, but there's no price on the amount of love we have for her." Do not be afraid to say that they are being impolite. Just be sure to do it with a smile and in a respectful voice.
It's funny how some people think just because an adopted child is from China, but is 6 years old, that she probably doesn't understand English, although being raised in an English speaking household.

It is natural for people to be curious of what they don't know. In their desire to know more, they sometimes temporarily forget social courtesies and will only realize that they have been rude when they recall the incident later. Analyzing the facts you have laid out, it seems that these adults you are referring to temporarily forgot that it is rude to ask such questions in front of your adopted sister. Look at the bright side: they might consider adopting children themselves, and hence, help more children like your sister have a brighter future.

Some people are just plain ignorant. It's a fact of life. But there are a lot of decent people out there too, so don't give up on humans. Congratulations on your adopted sister. I've heard a lot of red tape and time is involved in such a process.

Simple things amuse simple people.... Just say she's worth more than they'd ever be, and that shes your sister. Some people probably don't even realize they are being rude, they might really want to know, because they are thinking about adopting or are just curious... but yeah.. idiots all of em.

These people might be uncomfortable with "otherness", so attack you because of their own insecurities. They express this a "joke", which of course is not funny and shows their immaturity.
I think people who say those things are unkind and i really feel for you and your sister.
Have you mentioned these attitudes towards your sister to your parents? They might be able to help you find healing strategies or responses to the rude and childish adults you encounter.

they are rude because they do not understand why somebody would want to devote their live to a child that is not biologically there's. It is wrong and I understand my dad adopted me when I was a year old. after him and my mother got married. They always asked my dad questions like she doesn't look like you she must take after her mom, and she is so light skinned compared to you and your wife is she yours. He is Hispanic. And I am very white so you see. Just make your sister feel loved and make sure she knows that no matter what she is you sister and nothing could change that. Good luck Hun.

Well, from what I understand adopting a child is very expensive. I have two cousins from China. It never crossed my mind to ask them how much it cost, but I have heard it's Like 30k or 40k. I don't know. Maybe people ask because they are interested in adopting themselves. As far as asking if your parents adopted her, I think that's obvious!!!! My father used to say ignorance is bliss. I think those words are words to live by because it's so true!!!!!

Just stare at them and act as if you don't speak English. What pigs. They are trying to understand how the process works but in a discusting way. My cousin (who is like my sister) was adopted from Korea. All my life people looked confused when I said she was my cousin. I just said, "Yeah, I am the only white girl in the family............." to imply that her family adopted ME.
