This is a tricky question. Since every sale and transfer of ownership of every firearm must be reported to the DOJ they have a record of the number you own (at least those obtained since registration was enacted). And while the records are supposed to be temporary I have it on good authority that they are not. If the DOJ determines you are buying too many firearms in too short a time they may decide to investigate your purchases. Particular types of firearms raise red flags more quickly than other. While the actual number of firearms is not well defined there is a point that it can be considered that you own and arsenal--and owning an arsenal is illegal in California. So, I guess the answer to your question is, "Yes, No and Maybe". AG Brown doesn't seem to be as interested in firearms issues as was his predecessor, but that could change at a moment's notice. And just a bit of information for all you California gun owners. It seems that by signing that Safe Ownership Certificate you apparently give the DOJ permission to enter your home to inspect your safe. Think I'll just keep buying individual locks.

NO..there are currently no legal limits to the number of guns you may own in the State of California. (Subject to change of course!) And contrary to other responses the Justice Department will not randomly check for individual gun ownership unless prompted as part of a legal, active Police Investigation that results from an actual legitimate criminal complaint...No exceptions.

No, but some weapons need to be registered with the Dept. of Justice.
