I tried mixing the medicine with soft food but it isn't working. Any suggestions?

is it a pill?
if so, this is the only way I can get my kitten to take his medicine:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755242&cp&kw=pill+pockets&origkw=pill+pockets&sr=1
its a treat in the shape of a pocket and you stuff the pill inside and close the pocket up; this way the cat thinks he's eating a treat and not nasty tasting medicine
good luck
ps, if it's liquid then you can get a syringe (with no needle) and put the syringe far back into his mouth between his gums and his cheek and give it to him that way (the taste isn't as strong when you give them their liquid medicine between their gums and their cheek) good luck again.

Put the cat on a surface that is about waste high. If you're right handed, stand with the cat to your left side with it's head facing away from you. Wrap your left arm around the cat pulling towards you with your elbo. Using your left hand, hold his head still. With your right hand, put the medicine dropper into the side of the cat's mouth and push gently. The cat should open it's mouth. When it does squirt the medicine in quickly. Don't try to put it too far into the cat's mouth. That will gag the cat and if you put medicine too far down its throat, it could get in its lungs. It may try to scratch at you and if this is a problem, get a thick towel and wrap it tightly in the towel so that only it's head stick out. Make sure that after you give it the medicine, you give it a special treat so it comes to associate the medicine with something better.

Unfortunately cats are intelligent.

So there's no way to mask it that the won't see/ sniff through.

The best option (no matter how unkind it may seem) is to hold the cat (straddle over it with your knees on either side of it's body), squirt the medicine/ place the pill into it's mouth and then hold it's mouth shut until its tongue pops out and touches it's nose. This tongue-to-nose event indicates the food/ medicine has been swallowed. Your cat will probably wince, maybe sneeze and run away... but they will thank you in purrs and nuzzles when they are better.

You might try adding it to tuna instead of soft food. The taste of tuna might be strong enough to cover up the medicine taste. Also, mine took hers in milk until she got wise to my tricks.

Other than that, you can force it. Wrap her tightly in a large towel so only her head shows (I call it a kitty burrito), and she can't scratch you. Then get the dropper in her mouth and give her the medicine. Be sure to apologize and give her a treat and lots of love afterwards.

Put the medicine deep in the cats mouth, right in the center. Then shut his mouth and put some water at the side of his mouth with a syringe, so that he swallows. Careful not to choke him, don't put the water deep in the mouth, just at the edge of the side. Also, if you catch him yawning, like right after he wakes up, it is a great opportunity to put the pill deep in the mouth, preferably using tweezers.
Also if he drools after it, you can put a little bit of honey on his lips, his taste will improve when he licks it.

Is it liquid? If so I use a bulb baster and put it to the back of the mouth and squirt it in, it is so far back they have no choice but to swallow.
If it is a pill I smash it up and stir it into peanut butter then poke it in, peanut butter starts the licking reflex and hard to spit out. It is trickier than the liquid method, so I try to wrap the cat in a towel so as not to get scratched.
Good Luck!

Use a medicine dropper and have someone hold the cat and squirt it in.

Well, it depends. If its a pill or not. Crush it up with a little bowl of food.
