I have a 10 month old male Akita. He is almost 95 lbs. I feed him a mix of puppy food with boild checken breast, rice, broccoli, and carrots. 2 times a day. He has regular vet checks and the vet said he could not be healther. When should I start to mix in adult dog food? He could get up to 130 lbs the vet said, his father is 130lbs and mother is 100 lbs. How big do you think he will get?

Scroll to the -care in feeding- part of this article. It recommends switching to an adult diet at 8-10 months for an Akita. It also suggests not to use any food with soy in it which many commercial dog foods do have. I have also heard that it is unwise to give any Vitamin C supplement for dogs because they are more sensitive to that vitamin and adding it can cause kidney problems in Akitas and in Huskies.

Many people with this breed feed a raw diet.
Your dog is healthy as is, and most sites recommend consulting with your Vet when it comes to diet change.
Sounds like now would be a good time to start the switch.

Right now, I have a puppy and a dog that just turned a year old that eat out of the same food dish. I have talked to the Vet and he said it is fine to keep my dog on it until my puppy is older (they are about 6 months apart). The only thing he said is that they can gain a lot of weight. My dog is VERY active though so I don't think she will have a problem. I would start changing the food though. Try mixing it with his puppy for for a while and it won't mess up his stomach (which can happen when you switch food).

I reckon you can switch him over to Adult food now. He is a large breed and he will be fine on Adult . The puppy food contains a large percentage of protein, more than the Adult and you don't want to pack too much protein into him if he is going to reach that sort of weight you have mentioned.

What you are feeding him is a good healthy diet so I can't see any problem switching him over at this age.

I usually switch my Goldens over round about 10 months old.

I wouldn't feed puppy food past the 1st year for large breeds, 6 months for small breeds.

In fact I don't recommend puppy food at all except for pregnant and lactating females. I recommend all stages food, such as Canidae.

Puppies nutritional needs are the same as an adult, they just require more. So through puppy hood you feed more of the the all stages food to a puppy than you would an adult.

Puppy formulas promote rapid growth. Rapid growth leads to joint and bone problems later in life. All stages food promotes a more desirable slow growth, and leads to less chances of bone and joint problems later.

I'd go ahead and switch him over to a high quality all stages food now.

I would of always feed him adult food. Large breed dogs should be on a lower protein food so they grow a slower steady rate. Sounds like he is going to be a big dog but no one knows how big not even the vet. Start the adult food as soon as you need to buy your next bag of food. He will still grow don't worry about that.

the best age to switch is when the dog is 1 year old anything before that is not good . When you look on the back of any kind of dog food it always says the dog age and how to give it to the dog . Because once your dog turns 1 you will need to give him his food once a day and of course you can leave dry food out for the dog as a snack . That's how I've been doing it with all my dogs .

You can start mixing in adult food little by little each day. But usually when dogs are 1 year old, you can feed them adult food completley.

I keep dogs on puppy food until 1yr of age. Then slowly add the adult food so as not to upset the stomach. I would guess about 120lbs. My pups dad was 80lbs and the mom was 32lbs, my dog is 65lbs.

Usually at one year of age you switch the dog to adult good.
Sounds as if you are feeding your dog well and he is doing great.

Age 1 is what our vet says. I think your vet is right at about 130 - close to his Dad's size. He'll continue to grow for up to another year - more gradually though. Make sure he is on a large breed puppy food till then.
