Most of these problems were related to a very crappy part inside the fuel tank. It is a fuel level sensor and it was made very cheaply. The only way to fix it is to replace it.

If you mean the Gage sways back and forth quickly the Gage is bad. If you mean the Gage shows an erratic reading like empty when you know it has 1/2 of a tank some times but is right at other times it's most likely your sending unit. The sending unit is inside the gas tank. If you have a pickup with an empty bed and a few friends the easiest way to get to the top of the gas tank is to remove the pickup bed and carefully set it aside. If it's an SUV van or a pickup with a tool box or camper in the bed you will have to drain and remove the gas tank.

My car (which is pretty old) has a gas gage that goes weird whenever I'm on a hill. So I'm betting when the gas in the tank moves forward or backwards on a hill, it messes up the meter thing.

Usually if the sending unit goes bad it will stop all together. An eratic surge in the gauge is generally the either a short in gauge or somewhere in the line between the gauge and the unit. You can do an ohm reading on the gauge and wirng.

Sending unit goes bad. But you will need to buy the pump and sender as 1 unit. Buy it from G.M. so you don't have to do it again. Also check the connector for good connection at tank. Good Luck

usually this is caused by the sending unit in the tank going bad on those trucks,i have seen a few gages go bad ,but not as much as i have seen the sending units go out on them, and unfortunately you have to drop the tank to get to it,id check all my connections first though especially where they connect on the gas tank,it may just be loose or corroded, you almost have to drop the tank though to get to them, good luck with it.
