I don't think any one religion can be categorized as the most cruel. I can pretty much guarantee that most of the answers you get on here are going to be Islam, just because of all the stuff that is going on right now. If you compare religions, most of them have had their moments of reigning cruelty. Even today there are going to be extremists in every religion that will twist their religion's teachings to suit their own agenda.
But if you want me to pick just one, then taking everything into consideration over the time the religions have been around, then I would have to say Christianity wins.

Please, no religion in the world is a cruel religion. Every religion teaches its followers to do good deeds and help one another. It is peolpe who interpret these teachings differently leading to a misconception in several of acts of violence giving a generalization on that particular religion. I am sure that no religion teaches its followers of violence and hatred.

It really depends on your definition. There are plenty of ok religion out there that have horribly blood-soaked histories. There are plenty of religions that have violent dogmas that none of the followers believe in. There are plenty of religions that have violent followers but peaceful doctrines.

I agree with daljack, religions become cruel when fanatics go over the edge, using their faith as an excuse.

There is no cruel religion.
There are some cruel people who misinterpret their religion for selfish reasons.
Those people are called "fanatics".

The one that is killing millions of innocent people and trying to justify it by saying it's what their god expects of them.
A note to some of you above: Christianity is the "religion" of Love - not cruelty- and it is the one true way.
