Ok I adopted a family for the hoilday season. I know it isn't for a long time but I like to organized early. I need to pick 3 outfits (1 shirt a 1 pants), 3 socks, 3 underwear, 1 coat, 1 hat, 1 scarf, pair of gloves and 1 pair of sneakers. Then I need 3 books and 3 toys each toy is under $50). I also need to fill a basket of bathroom supplies. ALL FOR A 12 YEAR OLD GIRL. Any ideas?

Good for you, doing this - it will mean a lot to this family!

With clothing, go for cute, but not overly trendy... choose items that could be interchanged to make several different outfits. She probably doesn't have much to choose from on a daily basis. With the coat, hat. scarf, and gloves, choose items suitable for the climate - if it gets extremely cold, get something rated for the climate - maybe even go for a coat with a zip out liner so she could wear it longer. If you are able, get 3 multi packs for socks and underwear. Toys can be tough to buy for a girl that age... are you able to get suggestions or her likes/dislikes? Board games and card games can go a long way in entertaining friends and family; sometimes you can even find a boxed set that contains a few different games. There are great displays of books for girls in many of the major book stores; a journal or diary is also a nice gift. The bathroom supplies can add up quickly for a family in need; go for the basics first - hair products, toothpaste, deodorant, etc., but also include a small makeup kit - there are tons of great kits for "tweens". A fun perfume would be a nice touch, as well.

If you know any kids this age, get suggestions from them, or "borrow" a friend's daughter or a niece - their insight will be very valuable! Best of luck with your shopping.

I hope the school supplied you with the girls sizes. Young girls usually like things from Target, JcPenneys (junior section) or Old Navy. I would probably get 2 pairs of jeans and a dressier pant (black?) and then you can pick a couple of everyday tops and one that is semi-dressy. A gift certificate maybe appropriate for the socks and underwear. As far as a coat not really sure what the styles are this year, you may want to grab a couple of teen mags. to get an idea. When in doubt try shopping at a less busy time and asking for help from a younger clerk. She would probably know what is appropriate. Do you have a niece or a neighbor with a daughter about the same age? They could help you pick the books, toys and bath supplies. Good luck and have fun knowing you are making someones holiday much brighter.

Pick the shirts and pants so that she can mix and match outfits -- thus, for 3 shirts and 3 pairs of pants, she'd have nine outfits.

Get the coat a bit big, so it will continue to fit her while she spurts up.

Keep all receipts for everything, so the parents can return anything that doesn't fit or work out, for some reason.

If there were any books you loved at that age, give them. If you're a guy, then ask the women you know what they read at 12 & 13.

I think a kalaedescope (sp) is a great gift. Not the kind with the colored pieces in them that you turn, the one that you look at things with. Almost anything you look at through one is really cool. (And they're cheap.) And it's something the whole family can play with.

Otherwise, I dunno. Check out various toy stores, over the next few months, and see if anything catches your eye.

ask what size clothing the girl is wearing (my 12 yo wears a girls 14 or a womens 0 - she is also tall which makes a big difference) and what size shoes she wears. If you know anyone with a 12 yo, ask if they will go shopping with you or where they do their shopping. Wal-Mart is not always a good choice

Bathroom supplies - facial cleaning products, make-up remover. Usually if you go into a department store and explain to the sales clerk what you are looking for and what your budget is, they will help you pick things out. Occasionally they have pre-made baskets available.

Toys for a 12 yo? Try makeup (lip gloss at a miniumum) or inexpensive jewellery. My 12 yo loves music, makeup and earrings.

Books are also problematical if you don't know what they already have at home or are capable of reading. Again, going to the bookstore and asking the clerk for help in the pre-teen or teen section would be your best bet.

Good luck!

Seriously you should go to Walmart. You could find every single thing you need and prices don't get much cheaper than Walmart. You could also try the Dollar store for some of that, especially the bathroom supplies. I'm assuming everything is going to be brand new, but if not there's always www.craigslist.com
Good luck, that's such a nice thing to do!

12 year old girls don't like toys, till the time she's a hardcore star wars fan or something. some music won't be a bad idea.
try getting her read the inheritance triology by christopher paolini. books by mitch albom like 'for one more day' are pretty nice too. LOTR triology would be a great idea.

if you're planning to buy sneakers, try convos. they're nice. comfi, and pretty chic these dats..

#3
bathroom supplies, first do the basics..body gel, loofah, shampoo, toileteries such as toothbushes, a showercap if u want to. if the girl has got pretty hair, u might as well give her some fancy hair accesories.

#4
instead of pants, try jeans, make sure that the shirts aren't really old fashioned. if you are unaware of her likes and dislikes, try getting some classic tops, like a black button dow t-shirt, a pink tee, a white shirt etc..

i helped u as much as i could. happy shopping!!

Okay, I have a 12 y/o girl. I would go to Target and buy some cute shirts that she could layer. Or a cute little shirt. I would buy her a pair of cute jeans (maybe with rhinestones on the back?), a pair of corduroys, and a pair of black pants. You could buy her a cheap pair of fun fuzzy socks at Target or Walmart for like a dollar, a nice pair of white socks, and a cute fun pair of ankle socks. I would go and just buy a package of underwear, and go buy a coat.
