OK, I am the oldest of a very large family.& after school and on weekends,we are outside 24/7. I'm 16 & I know that I'm sort of too old to be making mud pies & playing flag football, but it beats watching soap operas all day.Plus i enjoy it.Anyway, us older ones (don't go in shock, there's 12 of us ages 3-16) get dirty from head to toe every day.We have this big pile of dirt on our property where we make dirt angels, mud pies,& slide down the hill. Then there's football, basketball(dirt court),soccer, skateboardin, rollar blading, volleyball, kickball, &baseball(with which sometimes we use rotten oranges. It's gets very sticky). Not to mention war(we re-enact the Civil War & WW 1&2.Includes taking captives from the other side, army crawling through dirt & grass, climbing tress, etc.) & our fav. made up game of swing knock-out (3 kids swing on the swings while the others run between them & try to avoid getting "knocked out".dangerous, but fun). hold on...outta space...

I know others say that it's good we're outside playing & not watching tv while sitting on our butts all day, but seriously, will getting this dirty every day hurt us in the long run?We all shower every night, and we know how to treat our own scraped and bruises that we somehow manage to get, but how dangerous is dirt?

I am the youngest of 8 kids who were raised before pong even existed and made our own fun and dirt was our best friend. Consider that we are made of minerals, which are in the very dirt
you love. Unless you have an open cut or sore that is not
protected or there is runoff from farmland, pesticides, dirt is
always being "cleaned" by worms and other various creatures
that are not interested in you.
ticks and mosquitoes are another story altogether, so use bug
spray.

get down and dirty

just one persons opinion

I have no idea. Kids need to learn to fend for themselves or else they'll still be living at home at age 30, incapable of doing anything without mommy's help. Or their mom will go with them on job interviews. I'd rather have my kid fall and scrape his knee and learn from the experience and not do it again than to not know how to react if he were to be seriously injured. Edit to add: It's the same mentality feeding the anti-vaccination trend. Moms think it's somehow better that their child risk getting DEADLY diseases like whooping cough so they avoid autism or soreness and the sniffles after receiving a vaccination. Because the soreness and sniffles and autism reflects poorly on the MOTHER, just like the scrapes and bumps.

The only way that playing around in dirt, mud, oranges, etc would hurt you is if it has bacteria in it. In my opinion, it sounds like you've been doing this for a long time, so I don't think it will hurt you or anyone else who plays around there.
You should be fine as long as you clean up afterwards and try not to eat it. =)

No, it won't hurt at all! I actually think it's great that you're getting all that fresh air! Dirt just washes off... If you were playing in the compost heap or the trash I would have to say something, but mud & dirt is absolutely fine!

Dirt generally does, not hurt people. But there is a couple things that came to my mind. Dirt alone is fine, but if this is dirt that animals possibly urinate, or poop, such as cats.... then you can possibly get ring worm. But a cream will clear that up. I hope no one is eating it..(sometimes little kids.. ha ha ) But if you use goo hygiene and shower or bath daily, then you should be fine!

Dirt won't hurt you. Just be careful on open wounds. If something in the dirt gets into it it could be painful. Other then that I'd say go for it. I'd rather be out in the dirt then inside watching the "boob tube" (as my father would call it) anyday. Good for you and your sibs!

If it did, then I would have been dead a long time ago. I used to play in dirt and mud all the time. Come in each day covered in it. My sister did too.

Dirt hurts no one, it can be washed off, several times a day and is a pretty good indicator that kids are having fun.

We played that way when we were kids. We used to get ringworms. Remember my mum used to let us take deworm medicine 2 to 3x a year. Somehow it didnt hurt us. I think it helped us to get more resistant to alot of food. We didnt get sick easily and seldom get food poisoning. We eat all sorts of food anytime of the day and it doesnt affect our digestive system nor give us stomach trouble.

Yes, dirt is very, very dangerous to kids. they should be washed immedialty upon contact. Lysol should be abundantly sprayed all over them at night for a thorough clean that last all next day.
Also never let your child experience life outside the home, they may start getting deas of individuality and get hooked on the "dope". Then they'll be taken to an insane asylum, often after just one experience with the" junk".
