Well, happy birthday to you.
May Allah S.W.T bless you in abundance.
Personally I would say that it is not wrong to celebrate it but you don't go celebrate until you forget who you are and you ignore your duties.
Entertainment is not wrong but if wrongly chosen, that's where it geys bad. Entertainment can strengthen a bond between you and your family if you go out with them or something like that, but some are just too much for us to handle that makes us stupid, forgetful etc.
As people have said on this question, Prophet Muhammad (saw) had told us not to imitate the Jews and Christians for fear that we might follow them even to something forbidden in Islam. And also celebrating your birthday is like remembering that you have a year or probably less than that to live.
The best way is just to thank Allah S.W.T that you are alive, well, educated etc. Supplicate to him for longer and meaningful life. Remember to be grateful to Allah S.W.T that you are born on that day.
My teacher once said to me, one of the best presents to give a Muslim for an occasion (be it birthday or anniversary) is to give him a copy of the Holy Qur'an. Why? He said that it would benefit both of you as he reads the Qur'an, he gets uncountless rewards and you too earned a part of it because you bought it. That was what he said to my class.
As a conclusion, to say that celebrating it is haraam is a bit "over." Remember that by the Will of Allah S.W.T you were born on that day. You should remember it as the day you first looked into this world by His Grace.
But that does not mean you can celebrate with musics of rock, punk etc. Remembering it is enough and never celebrate it to the extent that you would forget your salat, your Qur'an reading etc.
Hope this helps you, dear friend.
May Allah S.W.T guide us all.

Yes, you are right. It should not be celebrated because it imitates Western culture and one year of your life has gone by. Personally, my family does not celebrate Birthdays but I still appreciate some recognition that it is my Birthday! I know some Muslims who do celebrate Birthdays, that is their choice and I do not judge, but I don't go out of my way to have parties or anything.

Its ok only the Wahhabi/Salafee scholars are too narrow minded to say almost everything we do imitate the kafirs. What's not ok in Islam is the free mixing of the sexes who are not mahram, all-nite dancing between them, or involment of alcoholic beers etc those are definitely haram.

There is nothing to celebrate that God sent by spirit from Heaven to earth inside the fetus growing in my mother's womb. Prophet Mohammad SAW and his companions never celebrated their birthdays.. This is western celebrtion.
God has given us this life for our test to see if we shall live by the teachings of God or in disobedience to God. We will be punished for our sins in next life. Only good people will be rewarden Heaven whose sins are less than their good deeds and they repented to God for their sins in this life.and God forgives them with His Mercy and Compasion.
Believing in any religion without good deeds is not guarantee of heaven. It is how we live our entire life on earth.

Well, first of all Happy Birthday.
The thing is, you're right. We can't celebrate it for both those reasons.
1) Because we are closer to death
2) Because it imitates the non-Muslims.
The best thing to do on a birthday is give charity/zakat to others, and ask Allah to make your upcoming life better.
