My two younger sisters are complete over-achievers and are involved in just about everything. They're out of the house alot so i don't babysit them very often anymore. My mom thinks it'd be a good idea for me to get involved with something, but i haven't gotten many ideas. Right now i'm thinking about volunteering at my local SPCA. How old do have to be to volunteer? What kinds of thins would a part-time volunteer have to do?

You should call you the organization that you are thinking of becomming involved in and speak to the volunteer coordinator.

I don't know about your area, but locally we have a junior volunteer program at the animal clinic, where you would be called on to help wash animals, brush them out, walk them, etc. The programs are usually geared for 11-15 year olds, since you can get a work permit at 16.

It doesn't pay, but it's great experience and gives you a good inside look at how things are done.

Volunteering is a great idea! Why not call the center to ask about the particulars? My local spca allows junior volunteers starting at 13 years old.

It depends animal shelters always have different policies about volunteering. There are some animal shelters that allow children and teen to assist adult volunteers. So just contact you local shelters and see what they tell you.

I work at an animal shelter and you should be fine to help. It is best that you arrange a visit with your mum and/or Dad as it is important that they help you to get started. Best idea is to help with the small animals first as the dogs can be difficult to control and normally the shelter staff are keen to manage dogs themselves. Offer to do a half day at the weekend and get mum or dad to go along with you at first to get you started. Good luck , stick at it as the animals will benefit from your efforts

My grandkids, ages 11 and 9, go with their Mom to our local shelter, regularly. They play gently with the dogs and cats. Mostly scratching behind ears, petting, holding the animal in their laps.

Just like people, animals also need to be touched and held.
