did the kids have to pay to participate

I'd suppose that some churches might charge a very nominal fee. It does cost the church some money to run AWANA.

Mostly, churches would run this as a free program, to help the ministry with children.

Call the church, and ask. It could be that if the church does charge a little and if you can't afford that, the pastor could waive the fee for you.

Direct from their FAQs page-

How much does Awana cost?
Awana has been the premiere children’s and youth ministry for more than 50 years. We provide top-quality programs, materials and personal training right in your area.

We also strive to provide a good value to churches we serve. For as little as $25 per child per ministry year, your church can run Awana. Most churches disburse some of those costs to parents, such as handbook and uniform prices. Your church may also consider collecting small weekly dues or an annual registration fee per participant.

Contact the Registration Help Desk at 1-866-292-6227 to walk you through your unique needs and costs.

as I clicked on the awana page, my kid (3 years old) instantly came over to the colors and kid pix and was "sold" on it

here is the main message and point of it

Awana blends Bible teaching, Scripture memorization and tons of fun. Not pay.
There are collections made to support the home church (gas, electric, AC etc...) voluntarily given at each meeting. That is unless the church chooses to open the building to the ministry for free. (Cookies and punch for snack add up)
Nothing required except maybe the initial fee to get your vest and book.
The club itself could agree to support a missionary someplace and inform the kids (and parents) that the weekly collection would be directed to them.

Other than buying your vest and trinkets, there is no cost. AWANA is a great Christian evangelical outreach for kids.
