Where can I buy sourdough starter? Do they sell it at the grocery store?

I've never seen one at a grocery store, but I used to work at a bakery and we had a huge bucket of sourdough starter. I bet if you go to a regular bakery- one that mixes their dough in house since many get their product frozen and ready to bake- they might sell you a little bit of their starter- I know the owners of the bakery I worked at would have. Say- you don't live in Kalispell Montana do you, go to Gresko's and ask Steve for some starter!

I've never seen it for sale, unless you can sweet-talk a traditional baker at a traditional bakery into giving you some (bring your own glass jar).

You may do better to make a sour bread dough (tastes like sourdough, but the flavor comes from ingredients, not the starter) on such short notice.

Sourdough Starters are indeed available in Supermarkets in the larger cities. They are usually found right near the bread flour in the baking section.
