What a good daughter you are. I suffer with knee pain like ur Mom- Does she have a knee immobilizer? The best kind is one with a hole where the knee cap is located, with 2 small solid slits on each side of the knee cap area. ICE is a good way to alleviate her pain, along with elevating the knee and rest as much as possible. Taking up to 800 mg of Ibuprophen every 6 hours does help with the inflammation. I hope this helped. I have a few sites below that may help her out, also. One more thing, does she go to a Pain Management Clinic- they have done WONDERS for me! have your mother take a hot bath with 2c. of Epsom salts every evening, afterwards massage an analgesic cream into her knees. This will help take down the pain.
Make fresh juice, especially carrot, and have her drink it several times a day. Fresh juices are more easily absorbed by the body and capture the whole synergistic complex of healing ingredients locked in the plant. This can be very helpful for arthritis.

Herbs-Alfalfa contains all the minerals essentialfor bone formation, and may be helpful for arthritis. It can be taken in capsules or in whole ,natural form.
Cats claw is helpful for relieving arthritis pain. Feverfew and ginger also are good for pain and soreness.
The hot peppers known as cayenne(capsicum) contain a compound called capsaicin that relieves pain, apparently by inhibiting the release of substance P, a neurotransmitter responsible for communicating pain sensations.Capsaicin can be absorbed through the skin, mix cayenne powder with enough wintergreen oil to make a paste and apply it to painful joints , or use cayenne peppers in a poulitce. This may cause a stinging sensation at first , but with repeated use, pain should diminish. Cayenne can also be taken in capsule form.
Other herbs that can be beneficial for arthritis include brigham tea, buchu leaves, burdock root, celery seed, corn silk, devil's claw tea, horsetail, nettle, and parsley tea, and yucca.

The best approach for long term relief is to start using supplements like Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM. Also adding Essential Fatty Acids like fish oil will help. Finally, S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAMe) is an amino acid that helps.

keeping your tummy and feet warm (I know, it's weird in the heat, but...). Be very, very careful with a bath - it can make you bleed heavily, and that is also not pleasant. I personally found that the hormonal (anti-conceptive) pills have a very smoothing effect on my period (I have almost fainted with the pain, and I am by no means unique) - it is shorter and I don't feel any pain at all. This method isn't very natural, though. Of the painkillers, I found that Motrin used to have a rather strong effect on the cramps, and in quantities that didn't make me _that_ drowsy. But that's not natural either.
