No I don't think so. I think perhaps people trying to reconcile their life and actions with that they are and what they think they should be based on a religion they grew up with can contribute but I don't think religion any more than lack of religion can lead to mental illness.
I suppose it can play a factor but I think it is just one of many things that can play a factor. Religion (not matter what faith) can also keep many of us sane (if I am sane which is probably debatable). It is how you view your life and your role in the world that causes problems (along with organic neurological biological factors)

No. Fear, anxiety and stress are the top causes of mental illness in the USA.

God says, "Perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment." Throughout the Word of God, Christians are told "do not fear."

It is possible with other religions, but I doubt it. Fear of nuclear war and fear of a troubled world. We are told by God to be anxious for nothing. And the USA wants everything and they want it now. Stress has overcome men and women. We are stressed by our jobs because there is no security in our employment any more. We are constantly overwhelmed with noise and a peaceful moment is very seldom. We are tied to cell phones, tv's, cd's, dvd's, computers, and every other kind of wireless or wired device over the airways. These are devices created by the prince of the power of the air to devour man or steal, kill and destroy man. We create havoc instead of creating peace for ourselves.

I don't think I would go so fare as to say it causes mental illness. If you read history it has help make a path for man to kill billions of people over time. Has made a safe haven for pedophiles and cereal killers and politicians. I do realize a diminished mental capacity for religious people to think on their own and have a clear view of life it self.

honestly no, I was both atheist and christian and as both I felt free, I felt oersecuted when I was a mormon and persecuted by mormons as an atheist, but I have found many , but not all atheist on this site seem to have persecution mania and I would think they would be more open minded, they claim christians are chasing them with holy water and asking for the demons to come out of them, so I don't know what christians are chasing them down or were this persecution mania is coming from, but they are suppose to be open minded not persecuted like a mormon is in a cult, so no, religion does not cause mental illness because even atheist seem to be mental as well.

I gotta tell you: if I was expected to believe there was an imaginary man in the sky who watched everything I thought, said and did, 24/7, and told me to suck up to him or he'd send me to everlasting hell if I didn't ... I'd be nuts.
I would be a cot case - there's no way my mind could deal with that level of scrutiny no matter how 'good' I was.

Robert M. Pirsig: When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Religion.

Main-stream religion in the usa is still RCC.
In second "place" is the Protest-ant Sector.
Law vs Law is Loser vs Loser every witch way.

Harvard Medical Survey (medical experts) says:
- over 25% of usa is now diagnosed as mentally ill
- perhaps another 30% is also, but not yet diagnosed

GWB, at his second coming speech, notably said:
now I have the man-date I'll take my rule of law global in 4 yrs

800,000 PTSD soldiers who tasted his rod of iron rule of law
now say they feel "wretched" and "forsaken" by his rule of law

Dear America: Isn't seven years of GWB tribulation enough?

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

No, the top cause for mental illness is guilt. Humans can't live with guilt, it drives them insane. The only solution to guilt is forgiveness and that can only come from God, so "religion" in that sense is essential for the elimination of mental illness.
