The Bible commands us to judge "RIGHTEOUS" judgment.
This means that we have the ability to judge what things seem right and what things seem wrong. Of course, it also says, judge not that ye be not judged, but this infers that if we judge righteous judgment, we will also be judged as righteous....
So God judged the Earth as unrighteous, except for Noah and his family and the animals on the Ark.
This cataclysm must have been a nightmare for the remaining people on Earth... To drown.. or be struck by lightening... or to be crushed... I'm sure there were babies taking their first steps when the Earth began to tremble.
Why was God so far away from men that they had become so evil? Why did God create men, who would be so predisposed to choose evil? God repented of making men, and later, repented of killing them all. Oh, it's all there in the Bible.
It also says that man, after the flood was just as evil as man before the flood, which nullifies the whole purpose of the flood.

Using the common sense God gave me, and using the righteous Judgment that God commands me to use, all of this is an atrocity.

"Why was God so far away from men that they had become so evil?"

It's not God that was far from men, it is evil men that became distant from God.

"Why did God create men, who would be so predisposed to choose evil?"

God does not create evil, men had children and the children followed in their parent's wicked ways.

In answer to your overall question:

The story of the flood cannot be evaluated as if it a scientific method, where you make a hypothesis and weight the evidence and draw a conclusion.
You should come from the premise that after you pray for confirmation for the spirit that what God does is always right, then your whole world perception changes, then it becomes easier to understand the flood and to figure out why it was just and right.

There were people that survived the flood, Noah and his family. They were saved from being corrupted by the world and SOME of their descendants, their survival does not nullify the flood. Until Christ came, the world remained in it's sinful state, as before the flood.

Mistranslations / Misinterpretations:

God didn't kill the world, he refreshed it, he cleansed it.

God doesn't repent, he says he will not kill EVERY living thing, man and animals...he will leave some alive next time he cleanses the earth from sin.

Genesis 8:21
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Comparisons:

The flood acts as a similitude, that in order to return to God we have to be baptized with water and of the spirit. The flood of the earth was a similitude of baptism.
God made a promise, a covenant with Noah:

Genesis 9:11
And I will establish my covenant with you [(Noah and in turn his seed)]; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

The earth will be cleansed once again by fire when the covenant is broken:
Isaiah 24:5-6
5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

Baptism by fire is also referred to as receiving the gift or the blessing of having the Holy Ghost.

All this is in preparation for the Son of God to return to earth...one was for the first time after the flood....for us it will be the second time after the cleansing of the earth by fire. The people will be sifted and divided, there will be a clear definition of those that are good versus those that are bad.

Edit:

This is in preparation for the judgment day...the end of days when the Son of God returns and we should be prepared by having been baptized both by water and of the spirit.

Well... there is no god... there was no Noah... there was no Ark... there was no flood... can you say MYTH?

OK... judgement... keeping in mind that the bible was written by MEN... and that there IS NO god... it STILL has some good stuff in it. The mythical 'god' is not against judgement... he is against 'hypocritical' judgement... the OPPOSITE of 'righteous' judgement. Hypocritical judgement is when you judge somebody else for an offense that you are or have been guilty of, yourself.

"Judge not, lest ye be judged" is NOT a prohibition against judging others... it is practical advice. Here is a translation... what the fictional 'Jesus' character might have said if the fantasy had been written by a more modern writer: "Lookee here, Buckwheat... if y'all keep bangin' around, flappin' your lips and judgin' folks, don't be surprised if somebody turns around, gives you a dope-slap, and judges you right back... 'cause you're gonna danged-well deserve it."

Good advice... even from a fictional character.

Oh, yeah... you are quite right... the account that you reference WOULD have been an atrocity, if it had really occurred. The flood myth probably originated in an ACTUAL natural disaster that occurred when the land-bridge that separated the valley which is now the Black Sea was breached, and the Mediterranian poured in.

The REAL atrocities lie in the hundreds of millions of REAL people who have been murdered in the name of fictional characters in a storybook.

God created man perfect before a fallen angel deceived man and caused sin and corruption to come into the world.

Satan is sin and corruption and a fallen angel. The angels in heaven do not cohabitate with the human women. They keep their correct place as they were created to keep.

The fallen angels did not keep their place and they came to earth which brings them into the visible realm and they either took over the bodies of good men or they became visible as men. They produced giants and wicked people when they married the daughters of men. They polluted the line of humans and only Noah kept himself and his family away from such wickedness.

Satan rebelled against God and took l/3 of the angels of heaven with him. Jesus said He saw Satan fall as lightning. He fell to the second heaven which is above our heaven, because he walks to and fro throughout the earth devouring whoever that he can devour.

No better way to say it than the blood of men, women and children was contaminated with fallen angels. This severe evil God did away with and God will do it again because that same evil is in the world today. Jesus said when He returns it will be as it was in the days of Noah. They (fallen angels) will be marrying and giving in marriage.

Sadly, you are terribly misguided in your rant. First of, man was perfect in his innocence before he decided to stray from God in the first place. Thus, God was not far from man, we were far from him. After the flood, however, a few of us managed to correct our ways to the best of our abilities, and by Gods grace we Christians still live on today, thus you are wrong. The cataclysm was terrible, but so was the sins of man, and thus was his punishment. All bad things that happen are usually punishment, or a test. I am just content in the fact that he gave man a second chance.

also, to those who say the chronicle of Gilgamesh came first was wrong. That whole thing is simple another mans view of what happened, Moses did not 'plagiarize.' Your date is wrong.

1 Peter 3:19, 20-In this state also he went his way and preached to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient when the patience of God was waiting in Noah’s days, while the ark was being constructed, in which a few people, that is, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.
They paid no attention to God, nor to the message that God had Noah preach to them concerning the end of that world. But they were given to eating and drinking and having a good time, feasting, thinking of just themselves and their own anxieties of life. They were truly weighed down with overeating and heavy drinking. It was not wrong for them to eat and drink in moderation or to marry honorably. But when warned of global disaster, their continuing to center their lives on such personal pursuits demonstrated that they did not really believe either Noah or Jehovah God, whose message of warning Noah proclaimed. If they had believed, they would have earnestly inquired how survival was possible and then taken urgent action to meet the requirements.
God created perfect men with FREE WILL, not disposed to evil and because of free will, the earliest of human creation chose to disobey. Yes, men after the flood continued to sin which is why later on, God gave Jesus as a ransom sacrifice so that we may be redeemed from our sins if we take heed to the message and not be like those in Noah's day. He gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from the present wicked system of things according to the will of our God and Father.(Galatians 1:4)

I like the question, and yaa God just can't seem to get it right. I mean he admired the dinosaurs for millions of years, before he sent a space chunk and wiped them out. (mostly) Earth was once covered in ice, molten lava, contenents dance around, our moon was once a collision then our companion. there is so much missing from the male versions of religious text.

If I were God, I'd SERIOUSLY be looking at this planet right now and thinking about wiping it out again! Are you kidding? Just LOOK at this mess! And speaking of children, the children of today will be the ones who continue the traditions of greed, hatred, murder, racism, blah blah blah blah etc etc etc in years to come. Yep. I'd be thinking it's time for EVERYONE to go.

Back to the drawing board. Remove any and all inclinations from next creation, for hatred, greed, selfishness, dishonesty, etc. and try it again? Maybe. Maybe not, enough might be enough, finally.

The people were warned long before it happened. They had a chance to turn their lives around, but they ignored the warnings.

God has told us the NEXT time He destroys the world, it will be by fire, instead of water.

I don't know about you, but I take that seriously and am ready!

The earth was baptized by water and then will be cleansed by fire.Or baptized by fire. Lots of symbolism. The earth was a creation of God as we were. We are commanded to be Baptized by water and then receive the holy ghost which is a baptism by fire.
