Buddhism, Hinduism , Christianity, Muslim, Sikhism and all the other religions were founded by great souls. Unfortunately, they are all bodily religions. The soul has a religion of its own which is the religion of Peace which transcends all the bodily religions.
For instance, in this life time I am a christian. But in my previous life perhaps I was s Buddhist, Hindu or a Muslim or whatever. The point is with every birth, one's parents, name, religion, gender and profession also change accordingly so to me it is interesting for one to look down on any religion and think a particular religion is of God while the rest are satanic.
Having said this, I would like to say that the religion of God is that of the Soul-PEACE.
Note that God is neither a Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist. Because He is a Soul, His religion is that of the Soul.

I understand that Buddhist doctrines are more "how to" than "follow me". The Buddha was an exemplar of the method of discovery, realization and response to the misery of the world, not a "god". I also understand that Buddhism inherits from Hinduism the notion that the physical world is ultimately an illusion of separation and desire that disappears along with the individual consciousness when correctly perceived. To its credit, Buddhism states that the authentic response of an enlightened individual in the world is compassion, but it is still understood that this too is allegorical. The goal remains to get out of this corrupt and illusory world. Atheists generally believe that for all practical purposes the world is what it is and should be handled as such, and that speculation about a deeper "reality" should be kept in the realm of ideas until there is convincing evidence of its existence. And I know there are many kinds of Buddhism, including theistic forms that appeal to various divine Buddhas for help.

Buddhism is a philosophy, and not a religion. A way of life. I am open to this philosophy, I like to meditate, and I know that has changed my outlook on life. It has reduced my stress levels and I am more calm and focussed. I don't think you necessarily have to become a buddhist to follow the way of life.

It is one of the best and most believable religions in the world today because it does not assume a Creator and takes many stances on the world that are more philosophical in nature, and seem less like dichotomic over-simplifications (like the idea of good and evil, etc.).

Edit: Avondrow, no religion does a good job at explaining disabilities like that. But, of course, Buddhism, in no way, says that physical disabilites make life, in anyway, less worth living, or even that it is a punishment. They are a necessary experience for the soul. As for reincarnation being ridiculous, it is only ridiculous if you assume that mind and soul are synonymous. To be honest, it is as likely as transubstantiation, and equally reliant on the existence of the soul (but still essentially unprovable).

Rather nasty. Buddhists go to great lengths to point out that they are not like other religions, or even not a religion at all - they distance themselves from all the atrocities and wars carried out in religion's name.
But they spead the idea of karma. How vicious is that? That disabled people, or people having a bad time somehow deserve it because of what they did in a previous life! Leaving aside the subject of how ludicrous reincarnation is, you have the challenge the morality of such an idea.

a pox on all religions, even hippy ones, sez I!

It's an awesome religion. I believe that everyone eventually finds where their own soul feels at home. Maybe Buddhism is your soul's home. The only way to know is to learn about it, from books, the internet, and other Buddhists. Then you'll know if that's where your soul feels at home.

If it's not, then you can move on to another that may catch your interest, and check that one out. etc.

Good luck!

If I was to choose my religion, it would be buddhism. It has a great life philosphy, it brings you a lifestyle that, if you follow, it will make you a happier person. It doesnt tell fairitales so it's a lot more believable.

I just wondered why?

It is for your benefit that you want to join this religion maybe some self gratification or do you feel you have found the light of the world.

Surly you would not join anything that you did not completely understand?
