"If all the gold in the world were melted down into a solid cube, it would be about the size of an eight room house. If a man got possession of all that gold -- billions of dollars worth -- he could not buy a friend, character, peace of mind, clear conscience or a sense of eternity."

Happiness is . . .

Making art.

The warmth of a good woman's company in the night.

Fine cigars and strong bourbon, shared with brothers.

The sudden look of "getting it" on a student's face.

Good health, sunshine, the strength of my arms.

Family around the holiday table.

My grandnieces' laughter.

Walking in the ancient paths in the company of my ancestors, and my ancestors' godhs.

Dancing.

The smell of snow in air right before sunrise in the winter

My kids laughter

Knowing that I earned my grades because I am working my *** off for them

Family around the table with a homecooked meal

The Yule tree lights twinkling in a completly dark house

Hearing my daughter say "I love you"

Watching someone be truly thankful for something I have done for no other reason then to be who and what I am.

Knowing I have friends and kin who would lay down thier life for me with out a second thought, as I would do for them

My gods. My path with them. The peace that comes with knowing I am right where I should be, doing just what I should be doing. And all the warmth that comes with that.

I cannot know true happiness as I will never experience it.

If a person you loved was suffering, would you be happy?

This is my situation. As I love all of humanity, and all of humanity is suffering, I am not happy. There will always be more for me to work for, right up until I die.

In a more selfish sense, though, I believe that happiness comes from helping others. The more people I help, the happier I become.

Remember: Working only for oneself, any praise bestowed upon you may be false praise, as it may be driven by jealousy and greed.

e.g. What a great job you've done, winning all that money!! (*Now that I've complimented you, can I have some?*)

But working solely for others, the praise received can never be false, as there is no material gain involved, only the gain of happiness in one's heart.

So, in short, I could never find true happiness (it is near impossible), but each little bit of happiness I find is worth much more than a weekly wage (although my weekly wage is what keeps me alive, it is worth nothing further).

((((hugs))))

May peace go with you throughout your life

I was on a meditation retreat last spring that entailed exploration of states outlined in Theravada Buddhism called jhanas. I only got to the first of four, but it astonished me.

It helped me see why those Buddhists emphasize a "blowing out" of agitated mind states (that's what "Nirvana" literally means -- like the blowing out of an agitated flame); stilling even mind states of our ordinary joys and pleasures. Those types of "happiness," too, are "agitations."

When the mind is stilled enough, all experience is so MUCH more beautiful. That stillness itself is unspeakably wonderful, but, also, when you "come back" from it to regular sensory experiences -- sights, sounds, sensations -- it's like the whole world has been "cleaned" and just shines in wonder and meaning.

It's better than sex -- it feels better and it means more. It's like having a more direct, more clear, more substantive engagement with everything in every moment.

The closest I can explain it is like the time I nearly died as a child. When I was resuscitated, EVERYTHING was amazingly, unspeakably beautiful (even things like physical pain).

my children give me the most happiness
they are so funny , witty , intelligent and wise

animals make me happy also
even down to ants who leave me in awe at the way they work together harmoniously
I watched some ants at an indoor rainforest and couldnt come away from them for about half hour until I seen their finished work
I am sure some people thought I was mad lol

seeing people overcome adversity makes me happy
when i see people who were shy or not confident in themself...
come through the other side
stronger , more confident and with love and respect for themself
my heart soars

(((((((((Kallan))))))))))

all of the above is priceless

the illusion that happiness lies in something you can purchase and stuff away in a closet or shelf is indeed a bitter disappointment but is what is shown on mass media all the time to get you to keep spending your dollars

to me, happiness is based on the god Hapi or the word luck or where we get the word "happen" and fortune

I value things that are not chance but staples, things I can depend upon, effect and be proud of, mostly to keep the peace and bring unity and harmony

Sure Well here's the thing. Our bodies break down. We can prolong that. But not stop it. In order to live forever we would have to somehow transfer our consciousness to another body for true eternal life.

Happiness to me is a good cup of coffee and some interesting music to listen to. (Preferably music from smaller record labels and independent musicians. I have a hard time purchasing music from larger record labels, since they just turn around and use the money from their CD sales to sue everything with a pulse.)

My happiness is with Kharm. I am most happy next to her. If I amnot stressed to do bills, and we have a few moments to spare, I am most happy.

So, I guess you could say I just need Kharm t obe happy, which is true, I just need some money to stay stress free.
