You should not have to ask for it back. A responsible person will return the item as soon as he/she is done with it. If it is more than a few days, call.

When I lend an item to someone I always ask when they will be able to get it back to me first, I then add a bit of time to that. Say they borrowed a book and said they will get it back to me in a couple of weeks... if three weeks go by and I have not heard about it, then I would give a little reminder. It is possible that they just forget to give it to you.... I know that has happened to me. I borrowed a CD from a friend, and when I was finished with it I purposely left it in my car so I could return it the next time I saw them. Each time I saw her though we would get to talking and I would forget about it. About a month after initially loaning it, she asked about it and I was so happy she did so I could finally return it
Of course if you end up needing the item before they return it, there is nothing wrong with asking for it back.

If it is already due, of course. the due date depends on the following: nature of the item borrowed (or how long should it take for that person to use the object borrowed) or the agreed term of use. Say, a friend borrowed a pocket book...if it took you 3 days to finish the book then it is safe to assume that your friend can finish it in 3 days too or a little over it (say 5-7 days?). After that and the item is not returned yet then give out a reminder. Or if he/she told you that he/she probably needs the item for a week's time, then when that's over...give a reminder or ask for it back.

After it's obvious that the person should have used it already. for example, if you lend a friend a shirt and you see them wearing it, the next day would be the best time to ask for it back.

It depends on the item and how long the person has had it.. I would ask how they "enjoyed" the item wait for a response and ask for it back.. If they still don't give it back then ask again.. If you don't get it back then ask them to buy/replace the item...

If you need to use it I'd ask for it back. Or if it's been quite a while for you and you aren't comfortable with them having it any longer.
