First of all, show him that you are responsible enough to take care of the cat completely on your own. Do things around the house without being asked, like taking out the trash and doing the dishes. Show him that you are responsible enough to feed a cat, take them to the vet, and change a litter box. One of the biggest reasons why people don't like cats is because of the litter box smell. If you are willing and able to clean it EVERY DAY, and make sure your cat is well trained and doesn't do his business outside of the box, then your dad MAY be willing to consider it.
Next, buy some books on cats and read up on them. Learn about their habits, lifestyles and what makes them a good pet. Theres more to cats then petting and purring. They are very susceptible to diseases such as Leukemia and FIV, which is the Feline version of HIV. Its imperative that you get your cat from a reputable place, such as PetCo or Petsmart. They will make sure that your cat is fixed and has all the necessary shots and immunizations.
Once you convince your dad that you are ready, willing and able to take care of a cat, hopefully he will let you get one!
If not, maybe there are shelters or other places that need volunteers to come in and brush the cats, play with them and change their boxes.
Good Luck!!

Cats are wonderful. Have you ever ask your dad why he hates cat? Not just that he doesn't like them, but what about them he doesn't like. Maybe he had a bad experience when he was a kid. My cats play fetch, come when I call them. The can speak when I tell them to. Lay down or sit when I tell them. You can train a cat to do all kinds of stuff, it just takes longer than a dog. But just remember they are like kids. They can live 18+years and you are responsible for medical (very expensive), dental, food, litter, etc. I spend about $100.00 month on three cats. They are a big responsibility, but if you are old enough to pay for all this, ask you dad again.

Sounds just like me. My Dad hated cats, and he even pretended to be allergic, but I got one through a bet. It was that if I could drop ten seconds from my swim time in two weeks, then my parents would let me get a cat AND they would pay the original cost. After that I would have to pay for everything...... vet bills, food, litter, etc. Now, though my Dad will never admit it, he LIKES the cat. He even plays with him.
My advice to you is to make a similar deal, whether it has to do with sports or a "responsibility test". Make sure he (your dad) knows that YOU will be the one taking care of the cat, and that he doesn't have to have anything to do with it. Eventually, he may warm up to your little kitty, like mine did. Oh, and remember to save up some cash. Vet bills are not cheap!

Why does he hate cats? Is he allergic to them or does he just not like them? If the latter, he could grow to like one if you got a kitten from a rescue centre and he watched it grow up - they are very amusing animals. If he's allergic though there's not much you can do about it. What does your mother say about it? I saw an imitation sleeping cat in a store recently for £20. It looked very real and was battery operated so it 'breathed'. You wouldn't get the same fun out of it as a real one but you wouldn't have to feed it and maybe one of these would thaw out your dad towards cats and he'd allow you to have a kitten in the future.

Well, most shelters have a fostering program which allows you to take care of a kitten/cat that is either too young or not socialized enough to be put up for adoption. During the fostering, you play with the animal, give it it's medications, and socialize it (make it people-friendy). It's temporary until the kitten is ready for adoption. So you can show your dad that way that you are responsible and that they are in fact great animals. And maybe he'll loosen up. Good Luck!

First, ask him why he doesn't like cats. Secondly, tell him 3 reasons why you should have a cat. But I must say having a cat is hard work.
good luck

think about these first they scratch a lot/ dont play to much/cat litter and poop will stink/cats sometimes hide/you have to throw litter/are fragile.
if your okay with those things then tell your dad you can throw away the litter or take care of someones pet show you are responsible that is how i got my first dog. sorry i DONT like cats

Well, it may a open question here- did he have issues in his childhood days, his his allergic?, Is he concerned that it will not be properly cared for by whomever wants that cat?
Did you talk to him and discuss thoroughly?
I have a friend that has two cats she wants to rid of- she lives in Whitby-keep me posted and I can give you a contact phone number she won't give her new phone number to me-
long story!

You should just wait until you move out. I love cats and it sucks that you can't have one. But If he hates cats, and you do get one, somehow, he might treat him/her badly, so it's better to just wait.
